BBC - Press Office - Jana Bennett
Jana's time at the helm of BBC TV has seen the emergence of ground-breaking cross-genre, channel and platform events such as Africa Lives; The Big Read; Great Britons; Dunkirk; Springwatch and Flashmob.
Jana Bennett joined the BBC as Director of Television in April 2002 from Discovery Communications in the USA, where she had been Executive Vice President and General Manager.
Jana played a key role in the strategic development of Discovery's channel portfolio in North America, particularly at TLC (The Learning Channel), where she built reach and share from 73 million to 83 million US homes in an increasingly fragmented market.

Bennett says she has sympathy with the director of factual and learning, John Willis, who announced he would retire from the BBC before the new structure was announced after admitting he had had a "tough time" cutting hundreds of jobs.

At least Bennett is a woman who puts her money where her mouth is. She is one of eight media executives to have signed up for a special version of The Apprentice for the MediaGuardian Edinburgh International Television Festival later this month.

Bennett was in a band at Oxford, and colleagues describe her as young at heart, although like most BBC executives, she has a tendency to spout management speak at times.
