Jana Hunter - Blank Unstaring Heirs of Doom - Review - Stylus Magazine
Hunter has been producing handmade copies of her songs for years to sell at shows, send to friends, etc. In fact, she herself is a handmade woman in many ways.
But at the same time, Hunter’s two- and four-track recordings that often take place in her van and emerge as tape-hissed bliss folk are not an attempt at mimicking the past or trying to reproduce the anarchic.
Still, Hunter herself would be the first to admit and celebrate Banhart and Cabic’s influence on her as a musician and a person.

Hunter came on the Banhart curated Golden Apples of the Sun, and then there was the Banhart/Hunter split vinyl on the Troubleman Unlimited label.
Hunter’s androgynous vocals, whether doused in effects or brought us richly to the front of the mix, are really the centerpiece of these songs, and are showcased especially well in the two a cappella numbers “The Earth Has No Skin” and “Laughing and Crying” (a holdover from the spilt LP).
Hunter’s guitar playing here is fairly understated, relying on bass notes and effects to create the dreamlike mood that pervades the record.

Jana Hunter: Blank Unstaring Heirs of Doom: Pitchfork Review   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-09)
Hunter's "Farm, CA" appeared on 2004's Golden Apples of the Sun, the neo-folk compilation Banhart curated for Arthur magazine, and earlier this year the two singer-songwriters shared a split album on Troubleman.
Professional links notwithstanding, it would be a shame to write Hunter off as a mere Banhart disciple or freak-folk footnote, as her captivating debut reveals a new, quietly radiant voice with its own strange, feverish luster.
Although primarily constructed of Hunter's vocals and non-electric instruments, these songs otherwise owe very little to folk tradition, and instead draw much of their disheveled allure from her deliberately grainy, inorganic edits and overdubs.

Jana Hunter would fit right in with Kimya Dawson, The Blow, Old Time Relijun and Mirah, but it's kind of refreshing to discover that she isn't signed to K Records.
Hunter's voice and guitar are constantly distorted, and the string arrangements sound as if they're coming from a few rooms away.
Although Hunter's plummy vocals have all the wonderful reedy qualities of a pre-bebop jazz singer, the recording's amateurish quality lends authenticity to the song's spontaneous "confessional" feel.

Hunter said that Banhart and his people spent the night at her house and went to breakfast with her the morning after the show.
These three, Hunter's favorites, start with the haunting "All the Best Wishes," which Hunter said was recorded "on four-track with a really bad microphone and a plastic bottle wrapped around the microphone, so that it would distort." That distortion was intended to mimic the distant sounds of old-fashioned radio, her primary inspiration for the track.
Hunter said that she is working on a number of projects now, trying to revive Jracula, setting up a spring tour with Castenets and developing what she calls "an aesthetic" for her next solo album.

Jana Hunter - "Blank Unstaring Heirs of Doom" - Album Review - The Red Alert
For fans of the two, listening to the first release on their new label will be a complete non-surprise; Jana Hunter fits seamlessly into their eccentric, lo-fi folk world, playing music that is emotionally affecting but also somewhat inscrutable.
Hunter’s songs ache with a muted Americana loneliness, acoustic pop songs with pretty melodies deliberately obscured by distortion and rough-edged production.
Her voice can sound one-note when relegated to background listening, an illusion that is furthered by the relatively simple accompaniments, but deeper immersion reveals a colorful spectrum ranging from ethereal spook to earthy warmth.

A compilation of four-tracks, two-tracks, and music recorded on computer, the CD doesn't seem like the work of a onetime classical violin player: It has the musty scent of a recently unearthed, once lost recording from a lady recluse who spent her days porch-sitting and eking out a farm life in the dust bowl.
