The Biju Janata Dal is a regional party of the Indian state of Orissa.
After splitting from Janata Dal, the BJD has participated in several ruling coalitions with the Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party both at the Centre and in Orissa.
Janata Dal is an Indian political party which was formed through the merger one of the major Janata Party factions, the Lok Dal and a group of Congressmen led by V.P. Singh.

Dal (United) rebel Devendra Prasad Yadav dubbed the move “illegal” and said: “The merger is undemocratic and violative of the party constitution.”
The merger, Devendra Prasad alleged, was aimed at saffronising the Dal (United) which, unlike the Samata, had always stridently opposed the BJP agenda both inside and outside Parliament — “whether it is Ayodhya, Gujarat, disinvestment or farmers’ plight”.
Dal (United) general secretary K.C. Tyagi, who is a confidant of former party chief Sharad Yadav, said the reunited party was not bothered about Devendra Prasad.

Two of the constituents -- the Samata Party and the Janata Dal (United) -- that decided to join hands with the Bharatiya Janata Party merged into a single unit on October 30, 2003.

Speculation on merger moves began after senior leaders of the Janata Dal (United), the Samata Party and the INLD met at the residence of the Samata Party chief and the federal Defence Minister George Fernandes on Wednesday.
This is the third serious move to reunite various splinter groups of the erstwhile Janata Dal.

The Janata Dal (United)'s vote percentage went up from 14.59 per cent in the February polls to 20.32 per cent this time, while the BJP registered an increase from 10.96 per cent to 15.49 per cent.
It is notable that despite suffering its worst loss in 15 years, the RJD continues to be the party with the largest individual share of votes (23.24 per cent as compared to the Janata Dal (United)'s 20.32).
