Among the guests was the victim of the tragedy, a bright young girl named Jane Darwell, 19 years of age, and the man in the case, Edwin Sowerby, a miner, 27 years of age.
When Miss Darwell collapsed, Sowerby was seen attempting to cut his own throat with a razor, but the men present closed with him, and took the razor, one very much like the Army pattern, from his grasp, before he had inflicted what was more than superficial injuries to himself.
He heard Miss Darwell exclaim “Oh!” and as he turned his face towards her, his face was so bespattered with blood that for a moment or so he could not understand what had happened.

Missouri-born Jane Darwell was the daughter of a railroad president and grew up on a ranch in Missouri.
She nursed ambitions to be an opera singer, but put it off because of her father's disapproval (she eventually changed her name to Darwell from the family name of Woodward so as not to "sully" the family name).
"Needless to say," opined Darwell upon winning an Oscar for her performance as Ma Joad in The Grapes of Wrath (1940), "this is my favorite role." It was the crowning achievement of a 50-year screen career during which she appeared in more than 200 movies.

As with Hattie McDaniel, Jane Darwell's image was the eternal mother (or grandmother) and like Hattie, she died childless.

Dowdy, heavy-set Jane Darwell played mostly small parts in more than 100 films from the early silent era through "Mary Poppins" (1964) and rarely had a truly great role.
However, her time came in 1940 when John Ford filmed John Steinbeck’s best-seller "The Grapes of Wrath" and cast Darwell as Ma Joad, the strong, loving center of a migrant Oklahoma family coming west to California at the time of the 1930s Dust Bowl.
Darwell won her only Oscar in the Best Supporting Actress category, stealing the picture from star Henry Fonda.
