Jane Eyre:  The Musical by Paul Gordon
Jane Eyre: The Musical opened on December 3, 2000 at the Brooks Atktinson Theatre to positive reviews and no small contributor to such reviews is the music.
The heroine's, Jane Eyre's, theme is established in the opening track and is used to set the back-story and also tell one of the stories main themes: the overcoming social barriers to reach one’s dreams.
Originally sung to the young Jane Eyre by Helen Burns as an instruction in forgiveness, the adult Jane Eyre and husband Edward sing Brave Enough for Love (25) which brings the story to its conclusion and reprises a theme that was introduced early on in the story.

Jane Eyre   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-15)
Jane Eyre is an incredibly lyrical, moving composition, written way back in 1971 for a British TV movie based on the classic Charlotte Brontë novel, starring George C. Scott and Susannah York.
Jane Eyre was written in the pre-Star Wars days when Williams was still known as Johnny and, as you would expect, it lacks the bombast and huge orchestrations that have characterised his later, more famous scores.
The opening track, the 'Jane Eyre Theme', is simply stunning, with Bob Docker's piano solo floating away beautifully against a sublime string counterpoint that confirms Williams' standing as one of the greatest exponents of the graceful melody.

 Jane Eyre: Musical Reviews
Simply revolving around the main character plain Jane Eyre, Bronte was able to use the pen to bring her sojourns, misfortune and even her stroke of good luck to all of us, making us sneer at John, smile at the absent-minded Mrs.
Her vocal artistry and interpretation of the Jane Eyre role captures the essence of the character.
Dramatic musicals have to work hard to find their way into my world, and a fair number have; generally though, with dramatic musicals, I have found it to be the case that all effort is put into a few main songs and the rest is rather mediocre.

Jane Eyre is a haunting retelling of the Charlotte Bronte classic about an orphan girl who grows up to become the governess of Thornfield Hall.
Jane finds she is able to forgive her aunt for the cruelties she suffered as a child, even when she discovers that the injustices shown her by her aunt and cousin far exceeded anything she had imagined in her years there.
And Elizabeth DeGrazia is brittle, birdlike and faintly despicable as Blanche Ingram, Jane's rival for Rochester's affections.

 Jane Eyre
Young Jane (Lilly Kershaw)'s childhood is dealt with at what seems like unnecessary length, so when she gets to Lowood School the audience pump is primed to enjoy the number where the poor schoolgirls describe what their life is like, with several clever rhymes on Christianity (vanity as the bane of, for example).
What Jane Eyre might have been was revealed by some second-act numbers -- Malamphy brought some presence to Rochester's "To Begin Again," his proposal number with Jane was surprisingly smart and dramatic, and the wedding choral number "Secrets and Lies" picked up a lot of slack.
Jane Eyre is practically the mother of all romances, but this adaptation is an awkward fit.

ARTICLES (full text) | Marla Schaffel: The Unofficial Fan Website
Jane Eyre hopes to become a hit in the Secret Garden mold, presenting a musical version of a classic novel that every middle school girl (and her mother) falls in love with.
Perhaps Jane's long journey through the wilderness (after her wedding is disrupted by news of Rochester's mad first wife in the attic) gave Schaffel the impossible hope that things would turn out well in the end.
Although she had the "greatest joy" in originating the musical role of Jane Eyre, Schaffel appreciated the chance to develop a fresh approach to the lovable nun who becomes the von Trapp governess—and later the captain's wife.

Jane's trials and tribulations are many: orphaned, sent to live with cruel relatives, she finally ends up at Thornfield Hall as governess to Rochester's precocious ward.
And at times, "Jane Eyre" indeed borders on melodrama, what with its jealous, unforgiving aunt, sneering, almost psychotic schoolmaster, and mad wife hidden away on a mansion's upper floor.
"Jane Eyre" is Toronto's other big musical of the moment -- the first being "Ragtime." Based on E.L. Doctorow's turn-of-the-century novel, the latter is a much splashier musical-theater presentation about the interaction between American icons and three archetypal families.

This is a pretty plain Jane, one that comes alive with spirited ensemble numbers like "Gala Affair" and "Morton" but succumbs to duet-it is elsewhere, as orphaned governess Jane and her shadowy employer Rochester commune and collapse, over and over again.
Fidelity to spirit, moreover, is wanting: The plucky Jane of the 1840s has been reformatted to be more of a 21st century striver, and Rochester’s rougher edges have been smoothed.
She and Lily Kershaw, as the young Jane, are the very soul of the show, and the graceful transition between these performers is one highlight of Craig Duke’s able direction.
