  Observer | A repeat that's worth applauding
Last night, Root, who is now at US cable channel Discovery, was in Edinburgh to claim the award on BBC2's behalf for the second year in succession, and although she had advance warning this time, she claims she is no less surprised.
Root began talking to Discovery in the run-up to the Hutton report and spent her final few weeks at the BBC watching first chairman Gavyn Davies and then chief executive Greg Dyke resign in the wake of its findings.
Root may have left the BBC, but she is still trotting out the party line, although she emphasises that the rancour directed at the corporation by Alistair Campbell should not be underestimated.

Guardian Unlimited | The Guardian | Catherine Bennett: The Root of Britain's culture problem
Daring interviewers occasionally tease Jane Root, the controller of BBC2, by mentioning the things she used to say when when she had just got the job.
Not only has Root worked strenuously to banish the arts from this channel, she has, with her new Big Read, quite brilliantly produced an arts programme which demeans its subject even as its creator - Root - is proclaimed a saviour of the arts.
The whole, quite fabulously patronising presumption of Root's "campaign to get the country reading" is that reading is such a painfully lonely and arduous business that we need generous dollops of celebrity, hype and audience participation to force the medicine down.

As ever, Austen is in fine satirical form, but she and her characters stop short of outright mocking the fanciful Catherine and her unfortunate novel-reading habits.

Mansfield Park is my favourite Jane Austen novel, and while I found this Radio 4 dramatisation to be an enjoyable way to pass the time, it is deeply flawed in that it misses out the very soul of the novel.
