For the second time in seven months, he and Jane X. Luu of the University of California, Berkeley, have imaged a body that lies beyond the orbit of Neptune.
He and Luu reported their work in a March 29 circular of the International Astronomical Union.
He and Luu observed 1993 FW with the University of Hawaii's 2.2-meter telescope atop Mauna Kea.

 Chapter 18: Meteorites and Asteroids
Jane X. Luu and David C. Jewitt, discoverers of objects in the Kuiper Belt, have reviewed the topic in "The Kuiper Belt," Scientific American, May 1996, pp.
Since such an object was discovered in 1992 by David Jewitt of the University of Hawaii and Jane Luu, now at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics, an additional sixteen objects have been found.
Based on the rate such objects have been found given the small amount of sky searched for them, Jewitt and Luu estimate that there may be 35,000 objects larger than 100 km in diameter outside Neptune's orbit.

In 1987, a study group was organized under the direction of David C. Jewitt and Jane X. Luu of Harvard University to detect these probably small and dim objects at the Astronomy Institute of the University of Hawaii.
They developed a special method for tracing previously unascertained objects and were successful in verifying that their magnitude is from 24 to 25 and that they are reddish in color.
The transneptunian object 1996TL66 was discovered by Jane X Luu at Mauna Kea Observatory on 15.October.1996 at 07:14 GMT and then officially acknowledged at 12:41 GMT.

News from Pluto and beyond. (Charon's elliptical orbit) - Science News - HighBeam Research   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-24)
A decade ago, says Jane X. Luu of Harvard University, planetary scientists would have laughed at the idea that an object had collided with Pluto recently.
But over the past few years, Luu, University of Hawaii astronomers David Jewitt and Jun Chen, and others have found several objects littering the outer solar system, making collisions far more probable (SN: 10/9/93, p.230).
In 1992, when they had detected just one such body, Luu and Jewitt suggested that they were seeing the first known resident of the Kuiper belt, a proposed reservoir of short-period comets.

We present new measurements of the optical colors of Kuiper Belt Objects, principally from the Keck 10-m telescope.

Relative to the sun, the Kuiper Belt Objects exhibit reflected colors from nearly neutral to very red.

In 1992 astronomers at the Mauna Kea Observatory in Hawaii discovered the first Kuiper Belt object (KBO), which was found to be about 10 times as small as and almost 10,000 times as faint as Pluto [see "The Kuiper Belt," by Jane X. Luu and David C. Jewitt; Scientific American, May 1996].
Since then, observers have found more than 600 KBOs, with diameters ranging from 50 to almost 1,200 kilometers.
