Janet Evelyn Fookes, Baroness Fookes DBE DL (born February 21, 1936) is a Conservative member of the House of Lords.
Fookes was educated at Royal Holloway College, University of London.
Fookes served on the Council of the RSPCA 1975-92, and was chair 1979-81.

THIS YEAR Janet Fookes was lucky in the draw for one of the Easter Recess Adjournment Debates.
Fookes, the Conservative MP for Plymouth Drake, has an honourable record as a campaigner on animal welfare.
Her proposition was that, in 1987, 14 534 animals died needlessly, and often suffered needlessly before they died, in experiments to test the safety of cosmetics.

In the last leadership election in 1995, the then Chairman of the 1922 Committee, Sir Marcus Fox, also ruled that two Conservative MPs not in receipt of the Whip - Dame Janet Fookes (Deputy Speaker) and Michael Morris (Chairman of Ways and Means) could vote if they wished.
The Chairman of the 1922 Committee will again presumably have discretion over whether Alan Haselhurst (Chairman of Ways and Means) and Michael Lord (Deputy Chairman of Ways and Means) are entitled to vote.

BEACONSFIELD Tories meet this morning to select their election candidate to replace Tim Smith who resigned over the cash-for-questions affair.
The list has been narrowed down to three: Martin Howe, QC, (Euro-sceptic nephew of Lord Howe), Dame Janet Fookes, the MP whose Plymouth Drake constituency has disappeared, and Dominic Grieve, a London barrister.
Mr Grieve was not previously thought to be in the running but many members were impressed by "his intellectual approach".

I served, first, on the original Animals (Scientific Procedures) Bill Committee and was the founding chairman of the All-Party Parliamentary Group for F.R.A.M.E. (The Fund for the Replacement of Animals in Medical Experiments).
Subsequently I became Vice-Chairman of the All-Party Group for Animal Welfare and, upon the elevation of Janet Fookes to the Deputy Speakership, was elected as its Chairman.
During my six years as chairman we produced trail-blazing reports of investigations into puppy farming and the use of performing live animals in circuses and campaigned, with eventual success, for the reform of the Dangerous Dogs Act.
