Scenes are charmingly played by the two romantic leads, Janette Scott (Susie Dean) and the aforementioned John Fraser (Inigo Jolliphant), an archetypical 1950's 'nice couple',although Susie's calculating sense of ambition at moments threatens this spirit of niceness and prevents Susie from being too cloying.
Janette made many later films of course, including the classic SCHOOL FOR SCOUNDRELS and several sci -fi films (such as THE DAY OF THE TRIFFIDS), but none of the later films have the spontaneous innocence of THE GOOD COMPANIONS, which is uniquely a film of its time.
Janette Scott retired from feature films after her marriage (1966 to 1977) to Mel Tormé.

Ms Scott, who was an actress at Elstree Film Studios in the 1960s, launched the Dame Thora Hird Memorial Fund at John Grooms' flagship home in New Court Place.
Dame Thora Hird was a lifetime president of John Grooms until her death in 2003 and Ms Scott, who starred in many Elstree-made films, has since worked with the charity to help set up the memorial fund.

Director Steve Sekely's original cut was adjudged so disastrous that an uncredited Freddie Francis was brought in to shoot a whole new subplot, featuring Keiron Moore and Janette Scott in a vine-besieged lighthouse, to thread through the old footage.
The results are less satisfying than the later BBC serial adaptation, but it still has some irresistible end-of-the-world and killer-plant material.

But at least Sekely whips them up into some occasionally effective scares - one scene with a triffid closing in on a skidding car was clearly mimicked seventeen years later by John Carpenter in The Fog (1980).
The lighthouse scenes with Kieron Moore and Janette Scott were actually shot afterwards by Freddie Francis, later to become a genre director for Hammer and Amicus, when the film that Sekely delivered wasn’t up to running length.
