SDS leader Janez Janša came in fourth with six percent, ZLDS leader Borut Pahor placed sixth with only 2.6 percent support.
Pahor was put on the spot and asked to appraise Drnovšek's eight year tenure as Prime Minister, but only said that Drnovšek had been effective.

 Developments in Slovenia since 1990
The Social Democratic Party of Slovenia - a right wing party - left the coalition in March 1994, when its party leader Janez Jana was replaced as minister of defence.
Slovenia is often named in combination with Visegrad-countries as a favourite candidate for admission to the European Union in the near future.
After the elections of November 1996 Prime Minister Drnovsek was charged with the formation of a new coalition government, consisting of the Liberal Democracy of Slovenia (LDS), the Slovene's People's Party (SLS) and the Democratic Party of Slovenian Pensioners (DeSUS).

 Political parties in Slovenia
Internal problems leading to the 1992 election defeat have been overcome, Janez Jana now being the indisputable leader of the party.
In June 1996 the party filed a request to hold a referendum on changes to be made in the constitution and the election law.
In fact, the SDSS denounced its consultative membership of the Socialist International when the party was refused to be admitted as full member of the organisation.
