  Janice Eidus: Interviews/Excerpts
Janice Eidus admits to "an irrepressible urge to be funny," a compulsion to joke that inserts itself into her most serious moments—not always convenient, but always essential and releasing.
If Eidus' characters are sympathetic, it's in the redemptive qualities of their imaginations, perhaps only in the hopeless aspirations to change their lives, the wrongheaded but determined decisions with which they jostle themselves off dead-center.
As for Janice Eidus, she is deep into another novel and another collection of short stories, still exploring the magical territory between the real and the fantastic, the ludicrous and the serious.

In Thieves, her complex, assured novel, Janice Kulyk Keefer tells the fictionalized story of Katherine Mansfield, the renowned author born in New Zealand in 1888.
But the heart of the novel is her compelling recreation of Mansfield, as writer, as wife, as lover, as patient.
While _Thieves_ is about Mansfield it explores characters, past and present, which are intentionally problematic: _Thieves_ gives few answers, if any, and asks of the reader whether they believe "'pretend' is just another word for telling lies'" (3).

Wheeler’s Janice was always a funny presence in her Fran Drescher-esque manner, and Friends had good enough sense to use her sparingly; she only showed up a few times over the years, and that kept the character from becoming stale.
