If indeed Vega is a masterful poet and author, the benefit of that mastery is lost in her shallow venturing into the inner process of a spiritual quest.
Vega seems to intend that these adventures be of a spiritual nature.
In all fairness to Vega, it may be that she did indeed encounter the Divine Feminine and found herself either unable or unwilling to describe such a numinous experience.

The Alsop Review   (Site not responding. Last check: )
A character in the comic strip "Cathy" asks, "Why does she travel if not for adventure?" Poet Janine Pommy Vega has written a prose memoir of her "journeys to four continents." Vega is a woman in her mid forties when she makes these journeys, and they are by no means easy to do.
The sexuality of the book is part of Vega's determination to "respect and honor the body." (The jungle, she says, is "a constantly pregnant place.") Responding angrily to a man's assertion that "men needed sex more than women," she snaps, "I can't believe we're the same age and you still believe in that crap.
Vega seems not to be looking for a "relationship" in which sex is a factor.

Pursuing evidence of a neolithic earth goddess, she alights in the English countryside, where she treks to ancient towers and earthworks and engages in a brief, romantic fling with an eager innkeeper whose wife similarly espouses open marriage.
Cropping up at odd intervals are discussions about female energy, Vega's sexual intensity and evaluations of her consorts' talents, and other arcana that are treated with such brevity (there's a one-sentence account of a miscarriage in a bathroom) that the reader can't care.
While Vega's is a likable voice, her narrative never rises above the self-indulgent, unfocused standard that seems to have become the norm for the recent outpouring of travel adventures.
