On January 19, 2004, in Skikda, Algeria, a steam boiler that was part of an LNG production plant exploded, triggering a second, more massive vapor-cloud explosion and fire that took eight hours to extinguish.
The explosions and fire destroyed a portion of the LNG plant and caused death, injury, and material damage outside the plant's boundaries.
An LNG leak could occur at an import terminal, although terminal design, equipment, and operating procedures are in place to prevent such an event from occurring or escalating.

 orca: Labs Opening on Wednesday, January 19
Switching to pgina is requiring a little extra time for installation on the lab computers.  The labs in TEC 207 and JST 205 are now expected to open for the Spring on Wednesday, January 19.
Switching to pgina will mean that you will not have a "roaming profile".  Your orca home directory will be mounted automatically, but the desktop will not be the same as the fall.  On the positive side, logins should be quicker.  More details will be posted next week  - probably in the help pages.

Chicago reported mixed housing activity, possibly because of a seasonal slowdown in December, but noted a slight pickup in sales during the first week of January; real estate activity was also mixed in the Minneapolis district.
Contacts in Dallas noted that many firms were unable to pass rising costs along to the customer due to stiff competition, and Chicago noted that competition in the retail sector is expected to limit price increases.

VOCs - Sampling for volatile organic compounds (VOCs) was conducted on January 18 through Janueary 20 in the direct area of the debris pile at ground zero.
All samples taken on January 18 through January 20 at EPA's Wash Tent (West and Murray Streets), Austin Tobin Plaza, the South Tower debris pile, and the North Tower debris pile showed no detectable levels of benzene, and levels of other VOCs did not exceed OSHA standards.
Several readings noted during the morning monitoring period of January 19 were above the carbon monoxide NAAQS (8-hour average) of 9 ppm.

KOROR, Palau (Palau Horizon, Jan. 19) — The Palau Supreme Court’s disciplinary tribunal has disbarred an American attorney licensed to practice law in Palau for lying under oath, receiving proceeds and attempting to conceal his wife’s illegal business.
In the court’s 12-page opinion, David Schluckebier was ordered "disbarred and his name stricken from the roll of attorneys licensed to practice in the Republic of Palau."
Schluckebier has sent e-mail messages to the disciplinary counsel stating that he is in China and has no plans of returning here.
