Yesterday afternoon, Stan and I left Hong Kong to go to Macao for a brief stay, but the border lines out of Macao and another into ZhuHai were much busier and slower to get through than we planned.
The main island, Hong Kong Island, is loaded with tall skyscrapers -- one part, I was told, has the highest population density in the world.
The biggest differences I found between Hong Kong and mainland China are that Hong Kong is much cleaner with stricter littering policies, much more organized and modern, and it has a better public transit infrastructure (buses, subway, tram).

GUANGZHOU: Fresh water supplies to Hong Kong and Macao could be affected if the present severe salt tide in South China's Guangdong Province continues to flow, it was claimed yesterday.
Supplies to the eastern Pearl River Delta region, such as Guangzhou, Dongguan, Shenzhen and Hong Kong, is currently guaranteed as water levels in the Dongjiang River, the cities' water source, remains high due to water diversion, according to Huang Qiangliang, vice-director of Guangdong Department of Water Resources.
Macao's water supply could be greatly affected if the salt tide continues in Zhuhai of Guangdong, which draws most of its water in Xijiang River.

I thought I would share with you this fantastic map that I found on the wonderful Hong Kong University website - it is taken from a book entitled, "The Treaty Ports of China and Japan", penned by one Nicholas Belfield Dennys.
There are also many other chapters on Canton, Macao and a host of other ports, not to mention other maps.
It is a great resource for those exploring the China Coast populations of the 19th century and many thanks must go to HKU's efforts to digitize their collection and share it with the rest of the world.

The Secretary for Security, Mr Ambrose S K Lee, on behalf of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) Government and the Secretary for Security, Mr Cheong Kuoc Va, on behalf of the Macao Special Administrative Region (MSAR) Government, today (May 20) signed the Arrangement on Transfer of Sentenced Persons (TSP) between the two SARs.
"In January, 2005, the Government introduced into the Legislative Council the Transfer of Sentenced Persons (Amendment) (Macau) Bill to extend the application of the TSP Ordinance to the transfer of sentenced persons between the two SARs.
"After enactment of the bill, Hong Kong residents imprisoned in Macao may apply to serve the remainder of their sentences in Hong Kong, and vice versa," the spokesman added.
