 WTC Environmental Monitoring: January 5-7, 2002
This brings the total number of air samples collected and analyzed for lower Manhattan to 4,319, with 30 samples above the standard (27 of these were collected prior to September 30, the other three were collected on October 9, November 27 and December 27).

Currently just visible to the unaided eye from dark locations, the comet should be an easy target in binoculars or a small telescope.

An initiative to cut the number of signatures from 2% of the last vote cast, to one-half of 1%, passed by a narrow margin of 51.6% to 48.4%.
The magistrate's ruling is 16 pages long, yet nowhere does he discuss the state interest in requiring a party to poll 5% for the most important office on the ballot, every two years.
However, in a footnote, he did acknowledge that if the 5% two-year vote test had been in effect throughout Maine history, no party other than the Democrats and Republicans would have been qualified in Maine for as long as four years, ever since 1914.

A few great gray owls are still being sighted, it is reported that some stayed through the summer instead of going back to their home territory in Canada last year.
Open water on Geneva Lake, although ice in Geneva Bay is 3 to 5 inches thick.
Some of the back water areas that don’t have current still have around 5 to 7 inches of ice but again access if pretty dangerous right now.

This second-to-last scheduled maneuver puts the spacecraft on the right path to rendezvous with Earth on Jan. 15 (Universal Time), when it will release its sample return capsule.
At 1800 Universal Time (10:00 am Pacific Time) on Thursday, Jan. 5, Stardust fired all eight of its 4.4 newton (1-pound) thrusters for a total of 107 seconds, changing the comet sampler's speed by 2.4 meters per second (about 5.4 miles per hour).
In the early morning hours of January 15, 2006, the Stardust mission returns to Earth after a 4.63 billion kilometer (2.88 billion mile) round-trip journey carrying a precious cargo of cometary and interstellar dust particles.
