 Medieval Music of Cyprus
The seventeen Lusignan kings and queens that resided in Nicosia between 1192 and 1489 left a rich legacy of French culture.
Janus I de Lusignan (1374-1432) was one of the most important figures in the music life of Cyprus.
It is to Janus himself that we owe our knowledge of this rich music: Janus's daughter Anna upon her marriage to Louis, Count of Geneva, took with her a thick manuscript, written between 1413 and 1426, remains as the solitary, silent witness of the music heard at the court of Nicosia.

In religious matters, Lusignan was tolerant of the Cypriot adherence to Orthodoxy, but his brother Amaury, who succeeded him, showed no such liberality, and the stage was set for a protracted struggle, which dominated the first half of the Lusignan period.
Janus was succeeded by his son John II, whose reign was marked by dissension and intrigue.
During the long Lusignan period and the eighty-two years of Venetian control, foreign rulers unquestionably changed the Cypriot way of life, but it was the Cypriot peasant with his Greek religion and Greek culture who withstood all adversity.

Cyprus History: Lusignan Period - The Reign of Janus
This drew upon Cyprus the vengeance of the Mamelukes, who were still seeking to retaliate for the sack of Alexandria by Pierre I. In the midst of war, Cyprus was for the third time attacked by plague, and the consequent weakness of the island gave the sultan the opportunity for which he had waited.
On the night of the battle, Hugues de Lusignan, brother of the king and Latin archbishop of Nicosia, left the capital with the royal family and took refuge in the castle of Kyrenia.
After a captivity of ten months King Janus was released on payment of an enormous ransom, the promise of an annual tribute to Egypt, and recognition of the suzerainty of the Sultan.

Janus, much like his uncle Pierre, had taken to the wearing of a bared sword, representing his commitment to the Order of the Sword and the continuation of the Crusades, whether aided by the powers of Europe and the Church or not.
Janus led his motley band of troops, French, German, Czech and the loyal Cypriots who had liberated Famagusta from Genoa, across the narrow Gulf of Alexandretta to land on the rocky beaches of the former Christian state of Armenia Minor, land which by title the Lusignan family was sovereign rulers over.
Janus questioned the valor of his mercenary army's actions, knowing that the perception of his men's brutality would create greater animosity towards Cyprus in the region, a feeling which could lead to the island's destruction from her more powerful enemies to the north and south.
