Janusz Zurakowski, the first test pilot of the revolutionary and controversial Avro Arrow aircraft, died Monday, February 9, 2004, in the eastern Ontario town of Barry’s Bay, after a two-year battle with leukemia.
Zurakowski was born on September 12, 1914, in Ryzawka, a region of Poland that became part of the Soviet Union after World War I. In 1921, his parents moved back to Poland.
Zurakowski was interested in aviation at an early age as his elder brother flew gliders.
