CNN.com - Groups sue to change name of 'Jap Road' - Dec. 3, 2003
The path was named Jap Road in 1905 to honor the family.
"By continuing to have the street named 'Jap Road', Jefferson County gives residents and visitors to the area the impression that the county condones racial bias and discrimination against Japanese people," the groups said in a statement.
George Hirasaki, president of the Houston chapter of the Japanese American Citizens League, said he does not agree with the decision to go ahead with the complaint, especially after a bruising battle over the road 10 years ago that raised animosity between Japanese-Americans and the local community.

We understand that the road was originally named to honor Japanese rice farmers who settled in the county, but during World War II, the term "Jap" acquired an extremely negative meaning, and that negativity has not dissipated in the nearly 60 years that have elapsed.
The Jefferson County Commissioners unanimously voted on August 2, 2004 to rename "Jap Road" to "Boondocks Road." The road was named after a popular restaurant at the request of area residents.
ADL said of the decision: "While we are disappointed that the new name for Jap Road does not recognize the contributions of the Mayumi family, the original Japanese settlers of the area, we respect the right of residents to choose a name they think best describes their area."

Texas' "Jap" Roads May Become a Relic of the Past
Wong recently attended several meetings in Orange County, one of three Texas Counties that has had to deal with the issue of renaming roads that contain the derogatory word “Jap.” Neighboring Jefferson County and Fort Bend County recently renamed their “Jap” roads and Orange County is currently in the process of selecting a new name.
In addition to the word “Jap,” the bill prohibits derogatory words for all racial or ethnic groups.
“I think that when [these ‘Jap’ roads] were named, people didn’t think it was derogatory.

Among suggestions for the new name was Mayumi Road, after the family for which the moniker “Jap” was originally intended.

Jap Road was named in 1905 to honor Yasuo Mayumi, a Japanese immigrant who introduced rice farming to the region.
"We are disappointed that the new name for Jap Road does not recognize the contributions of the Mayumi family, the original settlers of the area, but we respect the right of residents to pick a new name they think best describes the area," ADL southwest regional director Martin B. We are disappointed that all the energy expended to rename the offensive Jap Road in Fannett, Texas, has resulted in a new street sign that altogether ignores the legacy of the area’s Japanese immigrants.
It replaces “Jap Road,” which was originally named to honor a rice-farming family that settled there in the early 1900s.
Many people believe that this decades-long saga of Jap Road is finally over, now that it’s been renamed.
