 | | In 1998, The Asia Foundation, working together with the Japan campus of Temple University, initiated a 10-week 20-hour pilot course titled, “International English for NGOs,” the aim of which was to increase the capability of Japanese NGO staff to work with foreign counterparts. |
 | | The Foundation also cooperated with the Japan U.S. Community Education Exchange organization to hold a series of workshops aimed at assisting Japanese NGOs in the design and launching of English-language websites with a view to facilitating closer contacts between Japanese and U.S. NGOs. |
 | | In 2002, the Foundation also initiated an international symposium on “The State and the NGO.” More than 160 NGO staff, academics, and journalists attended presentations by U.S., Dutch, and Japanese practitioners on the ideal relationship between international NGOs delivering humanitarian and social development assistance and the state agencies whose funds they dispense. |
