Japan Meteorological Agency seismic intensity scale - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Japan Meteorological Agency seismic intensity scale (震度 shindo) is a measure used in Japan to indicate the strength of earthquakes.
The JMA operates a network of 180 seismographs and 600 seismic intensity meters and provides real-time earthquake reports to the media and on the internet (Japanese page).
Unlike the Richter magnitude scale (which measures the total magnitude of the earthquake, and represents the size of the earthquake with a single number) the JMA scale describes the degree of shaking at a point on the Earth's surface.

 SEISMIC INTENSITY SCALE
Seismic intensity is usually measured on the ground surface, so in general, the shaking on upper stories of buildings may be amplified greatly.
It is observed with a seismic intensity meter.
Even at locations far from the epicenter, where the seismic intensity is rather small, the long-period waves may occasionally cause unusual types of damage, such as the sloshing of oil in a tank or troubles with elevators.

 IUGG 2003 Scientific Program
The JMA (Japan Meteorological Agency) seismic intensity scale has been playing an important role in earthquake engineering such as seismic risk analyses and planning for disaster response.
Since 1996, seismic intensity meters have been densely installed by JMA and many local governments for automatic and rapid announcement of seismic intensities in the region. However, it has been pointed out that the variation of the instrumental seismic intensity at neighboring sites is not small.
The 50th, 80th, and 95th percentiles were also calculated from the standard deviations of the SIDs.Finally, the probability of occurrence of the same/different seismic intensity scale at two sites was considered by using both observed seismic intensity scale and theoretical ones estimated from the standard deviation of the SIDs.

 Earthquake damage assessment
In this judgment table, JMA (Japan Meteorological Agency) seismic intensity of 5+ or 6- is assumed as input earthquake motion.
Based on the result that statistically investigated the past example of slope collapse induced by seismic ground motion, criteria to assess slope instability induced by seismic ground motion was created and hazard of each steep slope has been assessed with it.
Therefore, the assessment standards are created in consideration of the difference in the strength of earthquake motion in the earthquake damage assessment of local governments in Japan.
