In the midst of a breakthrough season on the WTA Tour that has included a Wimbledon championship (arguably, the singular story of the 2004 professional tennis campaign), Russian Maria Sharapova added another impressive credential to her growing resume last week, qualifying for the WTA Tour Championships for the first time.
Becoming the fourth Russian who will make the trip to the STAPLES Center, Sharapova has come on strong during the tour’s stretch run to Los Angeles, winning back-to-back titles on the Asian circuit at the Hansol Korea Open and the AIG Japan Open.
The WTA Tour Championships, running from Nov. 10-15, 2004, and won by the injury-riddled Kim Clijsters in 2003, is assured of crowning a new champion this year.

Baghdatis gained revenge over Tsonga in the final of the Grade A Osaka Mayors' Cup in Japan, but the tables were turned once again in the final of the Grade 1 Mobilux Junior Open in Luxembourg in November, setting up a showdown for the No.1 spot at the year end events in the USA.
Flipkens consolidated her Wimbledon triumph by also claiming the US Open crown and as a result the No.1 ranking which she maintained until the end of the year.

NEW YORK, Sept 10 — Japan’s Ai Sugiyama and India’s Mahesh Bhupathi teamed up to lift the first title at the 1999 US Open Tennis Championships with a victory in the mixed doubles final.
Sugiyama claimed her first Grand Slam crown, while Bhupathi added to the French Open mixed doubles title he won in 1997 with another Japanese player, Rika Hiraki.
He said Sugiyama and Paes were the “total opposite” as tennis players, with the Japanese woman preferring to stay back and let him take care of the net.
