 Liberal Democratic Party (Japan) Summary
It is not to be confused with the now-defunct Liberal Party (1998), which in November 2003 merged with the main opposition party, the Democratic Party of Japan.
For the majority of the 1960s, the LDP (and Japan) were led by Eisaku Sato, beginning with the hosting of the 1964 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, and ending in 1972 with Japanese neutrality in the Vietnam War and with the beginning of the Miracle Economy.
The choice of party president was formally that of a party convention composed of Diet members and local LDP figures, but in most cases, they merely approved the joint decision of the most powerful party leaders.

Japan's financial markets were deregulated and liberalized, and a study written under Prime Minister Nakasone Yasuhiro in 1986 proposed the restructuring of the Japanese economy to make it rely almost entirely on domestic demand for growth.
The success of the party in steering Japan through the difficult years of the OPEC oil crisis and the economic transition that substituted high-technology enterprises for smokestack industries in the 1970s and '80s, thereby restoring Japan's international economic confidence, was not lost on the Japanese people.
The emerging prosperity that accompanied this transition and the declining influence of the opposition parties, particularly the socialists and communists, served as further popular endorsements of the government-business alliance that the LDP represented.

The Japan Renewal Party (also JRP)(新生党, Shinseitō) was a Japanese political party that existed in the early 1990s.
Known for his political organisational skills, Ozawa organised a five-party coalition of the JRP, the Japan Socialist Party, the Democratic Socialist Party, Komeito and the United Social Democratic Party.
This coalition held 237 seats in the Diet, and after convincing the Japan New Party and the New Party Sakigake to join, was able to form a government under Morihiro Hosokawa.

By 1990 Japan was ranked third, behind the then-Soviet Union and the United States, in total defense expenditures, and the United States urged Japan to assume a larger share of the burden of defense of the western Pacific.
With postelection adjustments and realignments, the Japan New Party head, Hosokawa Morihiro, was able to gain the support of the Shinseito, the Sakigake, the Komeito, the Social Democratic Party of Japan, the Democratic Socialist Party, and United Social Democratic Party to form a minority government.
The party's fortunes have risen and ebbed: a low point was reached in the July 23, 1989, election to the upper house, when it became, for the first time, a minority party, and again in the July 18, 1993, lower house election, when it lost its simple majority in that body.

The Social Democratic Party (called in English the Japan Socialist Party until February 1991 and then the Social Democratic Party of Japan until January 1996) was originally formed in November 1945 through the merger of various prewar proletarian parties.
In its party convention in January 1986 the SDP abandoned the platform adopted in 1955, which was strongly influenced by Marxism-Leninism.
In June 1994, faced with the adoption of a nonconfidence motion submitted by the LDP in a plenary session of the House of Representatives, the cabinet resigned, and the JRP withdrew to the opposition.

The plainspoken legislator subsequently broke with the LDP, which he accused of tolerating political corruption, and with Ichiro Ozawa established (1993) the short-lived Japan Renewal (Shinseito) party, sparking Japan's biggest political reorganization the postwar years.
In 1995 he lost a Shinshinto (New Frontier party; Shinseito's successor) leadership contest to Ozawa.
