Japan general election, 2005 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Japan held a nationwide election to the House of Representatives, the more powerful lower house of the National Diet, on 11 September 2005, about two years before the end of the term taken from the last election in 2003.
In the previous lower-house election (2003) and upper-house election (2004), the Democratic Party of Japan (DPJ) had performed handsomely, while the LDP was barely able to keep its majorities with a reduced number of seats despite the popularity of Koizumi.
Election analysts ascribed the poor performance of the LDP to Koizumi's reforms that have eroded its traditional supporters such as farmers, "Mom-Pop" shop owners and construction workers, because the reforms, including deregulation and tax cuts, were tuned to help big global corporations like Toyota.

Japan’s decisive 2005 general election is proving no different, with the spectacular win of Junichiro Koiziumi being presented as the triumph of a samurai warrior.
Japan’s 2005 election was an event of sophisticated stage-management, with Koizumi using the snap poll to present himself as the only leader capable of making the necessary break with the past to dynamise the nation’s sluggish economy.
The election may also suggest that the health of Japanese democracy is vulnerable to the media-savvy use of glamorous women chosen to front an electoral machine designed to preserve in power an ossified collection of elderly males and their factional interests.

For years, party bosses were able to impose strict discipline on their faction members because they controlled vast funds, which they allocated to members’ costly election campaigns, and because cabinet and party posts were distributed according to the faction leaders’ recommendations.
The other is the introduction of public subsidies for parties; within the LDP these funds are under the control of the party’s central governing apparatus, which has thus taken over from the factions as the main source of campaign funds.

The funny thing about the Japanese election result was that by far the most important single issue of policy, and the one with the weightiest implications for the United States and the world, barely made any waves in the campaign.

Koizumi's decision to tighten Japan's strategic alliance with the United States and to block Chinese ambitions is the most important shift in Japanese foreign policy for a generation - but it played little part in the election.
