I don't go to many Japanese events anymore, either -- when I was younger, I went to every single one, just because I love the culture, the food (well, some of the food), the dances, and I am addicted to the sounds of taiko.
I (a sansei) wonder sometimes if we are there to celebrate the Japanese culture to Japanese (who have all seen the same acts year after year now for 30 years) or to show off some of our "old ways" and "exotic culture" to the non-Japanese who show up for the taiko drumming and teriyaki chicken.
She too needed to have those experiences of seeing the sights and hearing the sounds and smelling all the ingredients of what makes up the cultural festivals so hopefully she too could have some nice recollections some day of time we used to spend at a community event.
