Air attacks were the predominant and best-known aspect of a wider use of — or plans for — suicide attacks by Japanese personnel, including soldiers carrying explosives, and boat crews (see Japanese Special Attack Units.
Japanese forces, after their defeat at the Battle of Midway in 1942, lost the momentum they had at the start of the Pacific War (known officially as the Great Eastern Asian War in Japan).
Special ceremonies were often held, immediately prior to kamikaze missions, in which pilots, carrying prayers from their families, were given military decorations.

 The Story of the Invasion of Japan
The Japanese planed to coordinate their kamikaze and conventional air strikes with attacks from the 40 remaining conventional submarines from the Japanese Imperial Navy, beginning when the invasion fleet was 10 miles off Kyushu.
As early as 1944, Japan had established a special naval attack unit, which was the counterpart of the special attack units of the air, to be used in the defense of the homeland.
The principal goal of the special attack units of the air and sea was to shatter the invasion before the landing.

The Japanese attack on the United States Fleet at Pearl Harbor on 7 December 1941 has been the subject of so much writing and debate that general familiarity with the important events surrounding that fateful episode is assumed.
Both attack units attacked for 30 to 60 minutes and then rendezvoused with their respective fighter units at a point bearing 340° distance 20 miles from Kaena Point and proceeded directly back to the carriers.
The attacks on Pearl Harbor were not continued or followed up by surface craft bombardment because the sole objective of the attack was to destroy the capital ship strength of the United States Pacific Fleet in order to delay any United States advance across the Pacific.

 Japanese Special Naval Landing Forces
The Special Naval Landing Forces, at least at the start of the war, were highly-trained units who recognized that their position in the forefront of amphibious landing operations made them a sort of elite, and who evidenced correspondingly high motivation and morale as well.
In December 1941 several Special Naval Landing Forces participated in the Japanese invasion of the Philippines, and especially the multiple landing operations aimed at the main northern island of Luzon.
But most of the Special Naval Landing Forces and the more improvised naval ground units raised in the final two years of the war were a far cry from the well-trained units which led the way in the early successful Pacific offensives [ 2 ].

 Tinian National Historical ParkStudy
Tinian is sometimes frequented by the Mariana fruit bat (Pteropus mariannus mariannus), which is on the CNMI Endangered Species List and proposed for federal listing throughout the Marianas archipelago.  The fruit bat roosts in large trees surrounding Lake Hagoi and along the clifflines and forest plateau near Mount Lasso. 
There have been five unconfirmed Brown Tree Snake (Boigus irregularis) sightings on Tinian: one in February 1990 and four were spotted during one sighting in November 1995.  The snake is an alien species that preys on and is highly destructive to native birds.
North Field, when completed in 1945, was the largest airbase in the Pacific, perhaps in the world.  Each of its four parallel runways stretch east and west for 8,500 feet.  Around and in between the runways are nearly eleven miles of taxiways.
