Japanese aircraft carrier Ryujo - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Ryujo (Japanese: 龍驤, "prancing dragon") was a light aircraft carrier of the Imperial Japanese Navy.
In June 1942 Ryujo was part of the Northern Force that attacked the Aleutian Islands as a diversion from the battle of Midway.
Ryujo's role in the operation was to support a convoy of transports that were to reinforce and resupply Japanese troops on Guadalcanal, and to attack the Allied air base at Henderson Field, while the fleet carriers operated against the US Navy's aircraft carriers.

TBF Avenger - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Grumman TBF Avenger (designated TBM for aircraft manufactured by General Motors) was an American torpedo bomber, developed initially for the United States Navy and Marine Corps and used by a large number of air forces around the world.
During the Battle of Midway, all of the three aircraft carriers' torpedo groups (from the USS Hornet, USS Enterprise, and USS Yorktown) had taken horrendous casualties; one group had a single survivor (Ensign George Gay).
With only two carriers (the USS Saratoga and the Enterprise), the 24 TBFs present were able to sink the Japanese aircraft carrier Ryujo and claim one dive bomber, at the cost of seven planes.

 USS Saratoga (CV-3)
Her aircraft struck Wotje and Taroa for three days, from 29 to 31 January, and then pounded Engebi, the main island at Eniwetok, the 3rd to the 6th and from the 10th to the 12th of February.
By 2015, the fires were under control and the carrier was able to recover aircraft, but she was ordered to Eniwetok and then to the west coast for repairs, and arrived at Bremerton on 16 March.
With the arrival of large numbers of Essex-class carriers, Saratoga was surplus to postwar requirements, and she was assigned to Operation Crossroads at Bikini Atoll to test the effect of the atomic bomb on naval vessels.

Japanese Navy Ships--Ryujo (Aircraft Carrier, 1933)
Ryujo was one of these, and during the mid-1930s she was extensively reconstructed to make her suitable for service.
Ryujo was to cover the convoy and send planes to attack the American airfield on the island, while the larger Japanese carriers operated separately against the U.S. Navy's aircraft carriers.
Thus, in the 24 August Battle of the Eastern Solomons, Ryujo, isolated from other sources of air support and with most of her planes off on a strike mission, was overwhelmed by a powerful air assault from USS Saratoga.
