She was also the first battleship to be built domestically in Japan, although many parts came from Great Britain.
The Satsuma was scrapped to comply with the provisions of the 1922 Washington Treaty, and was expended as a target.

 Japanese Battleships
The Fuso class battleships were characterized by their tall superstructures.  Although they were more heavily armed and faster than most foreign battleships of the time, they lacked much in armor.  These ships were already out dated by World War II and were easily sunk by US naval Forces.
The Nagato class of battleships not only was the first Japanese battleships to sport the 16” guns, but also the first in the world to have them.  She was also faster and bettered armored than most her counterparts of the day.
The fourth Yamato class of battleship was laid 7 November 1940.  However, it was cancelled in 1942 and scrapped in 1943.

Battleships missed their chance for many surface actions because they were being held back for the more "serious" fleet actions that never occurred.
However, these were indeed battleships, of the kind (Pre-Dreadoughts) that had just fought at Tsushima, more in number than the entire battleship fleet of Japan in World War II (twelve ships), and the real pecularity is just that they would sail alone.

Commander Kanaga, a 38-year resident of Redlands and recipient of the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Navy Cross, the nation's second highest medal for valor, died Monday (June 4, 2001) at Braswell's Colonial Care in Redlands, California.

In two separate attacks, the TBDs launched a total of 22 torpedoes in Tulagi harbor, but their only success was the sinking of the minesweeper "Tama Maru." This was probably due to the poor quality of the aerial torpedoes, and the inexperience of the American flight crews.

An excellent example is given of military doublespeak when it refers to the damage to the Hyuga.
The report said that, due to the holes left in the ship from the attack, the ship “lost buoyancy...and sunk.” Pretty much what happens to a ship that is bombed in that way.

 Hyuga Veterans Visit
The image link at right shows four crewmembers of the Japanese Battleship IJN Hyuga who, during Paul Brehm's recent visit to Japan, surprised everyone by pulling out and displaying their ship's battle flag, which has been kept safe all these years.
Although there was a considerable language barrier, local translators from the Hiroshima Friendship Center kindly volunteered their services and conducted all translations for both American and Japanese veterans for the duration of the visit.
