The Imperial Japanese Navy 's Japanese battleship Satsuma was the first battleship in the world to be designed and laid down as an all-big-gun battleship, although gun shortages only allowed her to be equipped with four of the twelve 12-in guns that had been planned.
The Italian Italian battleship Giulio Cesare was taken by the Soviets as reparations and renamed Novorossiysk; it was sunk by a German mine in the Black Sea October 29 1955.

Eight 14 inch guns, sixteen 6 inch guns, eight 5 inch DP, up to 118 × 25 mm AA Kirishima (霧島) was the Imperial Japanese Navy's fourth Kongo class battlecruiser, and was laid down by Mitsubishi in Nagasaki on March 17, 1912, launched on December 1, 1913 and commissioned on April 19, 1915.
From 1933 to 1934, she was reconstructed at Kure, Japan, emerging from her reconstruction as a "fast battleship", 4,000 tons heavier than her original incarnation.
On November 15, 1942, Kirishima engaged American vessels in the Battle of Guadalcanal, and while inflicting some damage on the USS South Dakota, was sunk by heavy fire from the USS Washington.

In 1934 she was re-rated as a fast battleship and began to obtain the pagoda mast she would carry throughout her career.
In December of 1941, Kirishima was part of the escort for the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, her high speed making her an ideal carrier escort ship.
Both sides disengage soon afterwards but the damage to the Kirishima is too great and she sinks later that night with the loss of around 300 crewmen.

The Fuso class battleships were characterized by their tall superstructures.  Although they were more heavily armed and faster than most foreign battleships of the time, they lacked much in armor.  These ships were already out dated by World War II and were easily sunk by US naval Forces.
The Nagato class of battleships not only was the first Japanese battleships to sport the 16” guns, but also the first in the world to have them.  She was also faster and bettered armored than most her counterparts of the day.
The fourth Yamato class of battleship was laid 7 November 1940.  However, it was cancelled in 1942 and scrapped in 1943.

She was the last of the four Japanese carriers to be fatally stricken during the battle, and before she sank her air group accounted for the USS Yorktown.
She then served in the Solomons, where she became the first Japanese battleship to be lost in the war, when she was turned into a burning wreck by about 50 shells of 5-inch to 8-inch caliber off Guadalcanal on November 12-13, 1942, her shattered hulk being sunk that morning by U.S. aircraft.

The main problem with the desire to build a better battleship was the strict 35,000-ton limit that still applied to any new U.S. battleships at the time of the construction of the South Dakota class.
South Dakota herself stood the test of her armor when she was engaged by the Japanese battleship Kirishima in the Second Naval Battle of Guadalcanal.
