As the speed of the Russian armored cruiser was about the same as that of the Japanese light cruisers there was little chance of bringing her to action.
But he had misjudged the heroic resistance of his enemy, and just as he turned Naniwa to lead round to port a 6-inch shell hit aft and did so much damage that in a few minutes she was listing 7 degrees and had to withdraw from the action.
As soon as the firing stopped the 2nd Destroyer Division tried to run in between Donskoi and Matsushima to finish her, but found that she was already too close to the rocks and had to deliver an unsuccessful attack from seaward.

A Japanese fleet under Admiral Isokuru Ito was attempting to disrupt the landing of Chinese troops protected by a fleet under Admiral Ting Ju ch'ang.
The Japanese advanced on the Chinese with the flying squadron leading in line astern formation with the despatch vessels off to the port of the second squadron (where the flagship was).
Japanese shells set many Chinese ships aflame, and were responsible for sinking or seriously damaging eight of them, either during the battle or during later mopping up operations.

 The Battle of the Yalu, 17 September 1894
In the morning of 20 July 1894 a Japanese Flying Squadron of three ironclad cruisers was on patrol in the Gulf of Asan on the west coast of Korea.
At daybreak on the 17th the Japanese fleet was in sight of Hai-yang Island, 35 miles off the coast at the northern end of Korea Bay and 100 miles east of Port Arthur, China's main naval base.
The cruiser Tsi Yuen, survivor of the brush with Togo's Flying Squadron at Asan, was the first ship to be hit, and, true to form, she broke away from the line and ran for the sanctuary of Port Arthur.

A squadron of three cruisers gave chase, but at their top speed of 18 knots were unable to close the distance until another pair of Japanese ships appeared from the NW, forcing Donskoi to alter course towards the Japanese mainland.
The Japanese ships closed the range, inflicting horrible slaughter on the old Russian vessel, whose decks were packed with 270 survivors of the sunken battleship Sissoi Veliky and the destroyer Buiny.
Having landed on Matsushima by dawn on the 28th, the survivors were taken off for interment.

The flagship and two other French-built cruisers each had a single heavy gun--mounted to the front or to the rear depending on the ship--but were otherwise just protected cruisers, not battleships.
These ships and many of the supporting cruisers could fire most oif their main guns straight ahead, and the Chinese used a formation that took advantage of this (some have compared it to the Austrian formation that opened the battle of Lissa, the previous ironclad fleet engagement).
The flagship Matsushima and several of the weaker ships (especially the old ironclad Hiei, the gunboat Akagi, and the armed liner Saikyo) were forced to withdraw after heavy hits.
