She was sunk on November 29, 1944 by four torpedoes launched from the submarine USS Archerfish (Commander Joseph F. Enright) while she was transferred from Yokosuka to Kure - the hull compartmentation had not yet been installed.

Mikuma, a 11,169-ton light cruiser built at Nagasaki, Japan, was completed in August 1935, and massively rebuilt a year later to repair serious design defects.
Originally constructed as a light cruiser with fifteen six-inch guns, she was converted to a heavy cruiser with ten eight-inch guns in 1939.
Mikuma played an active role in the early months of World War II in the Pacific, helping to sink USS Houston (CA-30) and the Australian light cruiser Perth in the Battle of Sunda Strait on 1 March 1942.

While the Japanese second wave was still rearming, a Japanese patrol aircraft spotted the American carriers and reported their position and course, but not that they were aircraft carriers.
The Japanese force still greatly outnumbered the American force, and initially Admiral Yamamoto wanted to continue the battle, but then he realized that with the loss of the 4 aircraft carriers and their air units, his battleships and the invasion force became too vulnerable to American air attacks.
The failure of the 16 Japanese submarines in an early warning mission to detect the American carriers presence is a tactical failure.
