Japanese games may seem quite intimidating to those unfamiliar with the language.
The surprise expressed by my friends in large part resulted from the common but false assumption that if you are to play any games with Japanese text in the menus or what have you, that you must possess fluency in or at least working knowledge of the language.
Japanese is a fascinating, complex, and difficult language.

Japanese Video Games: A Model for International Popular Medias?
They are usually not labeled as "Japanese" or marketed under the platform of being "Japanese" as anime and manga almost invariably are; and most consumers who buy the games don't bother to question where each individual game was developed; it isn't an issue for most consumers.
game developers wanted a home platform for which to develop their games as well, and the NES was basically the only platform available.
Some U.S.-based game development companies would even buy the rights to translate and sell Japanese games in the U.S. because it was more economically efficient than developing entirely new American games on their own.

Ever since video games made the jump from 2-D to 3-D in the mid 1990s, innovation, as far as the gaming industry is concerned, has been limited to mostly incremental upgrades.
The Japanese are accustomed to playing games that attract a broad spectrum of people, whereas most of the games that reach the U.S. usually don't appeal much beyond the demographic of adolescent boys.

TNL Forum - Western games vs. Japanese games...
I mean, I've loved a lot of Japanese games this past year, Shenmue 2, Virtua Fighter 4, Sega GT 2002, Mario Sunshine, but even without including PC games, Western games like Mech Assault, Splinter Cell, Starfox Adventures, Rallisport Challenge, GTA:VC, Moto GP, Uneal 2003/Championship, Hitman 2, and Morrowind have really dominated my time this year.
Though I did buy and enjoy two Western games this year, which is almost a record for me. I'm not trying to belittle western developers, it's just that my tastes and interests in gaming are heavily lopsided towards the east.
To say, though, that Japanese game developers are losing ground very quickly would be an understatement by me. I think there's alot of pressure on these companies to produce some hits for this next year.

Tokyopia: What's Wrong With the Japanese Games Industry: the artist's view
Games tend to be slight extensions of projects done before, over and over, for years and years.
Our theory is now this: in the old days, when optimization was a big deal, Japanese developers got the early hand up and created some of the forefathers of the modern game industry, establishing many of the rules and styles that have become international standards, some franchises continuing even to this day.
So we're stuck in a situation where Western games and all the new ideas and standards that are taking off abroad are not being allowed to take root in Japanese games culture.

In her book "Samurai From Outer Space", Japan historian/anime fan Antonia Levi coins a term she affectionately calls "the nerd hero." Anime, of course, is what the Japanese call their animation, and it often features insecure, dorky men in love stories where they are inexplicably pursued by well-meaning and sweet women.
These games established a contextual arena for much of Japan's gaming industry, and it would be a few more years until these mythical stories collided with the growing modern sensibilities of the anime that inspired them.
The game itself works as an excellent post-modern text on Japanese gaming in general, and no more so than in the way it handles its central protagonist.
