Japanese grammar - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Grammatically, Japanese is an SOV dependent-marking language, with verbs always constrained to the sentence-final position, except in some rhetorical and poetic usage.
Japanese nouns are non-inflecting and have neither gender nor number; in addition, Japanese lacks articles.
Nearly every Japanese adjective can be used in a predicative position; this differs from English where there are many common adjectives such as "major", as in "a major question", that cannot be used to in the predicate position (that is, *"The question is major" is not grammatical English).

Japanese has many ways to express different levels of politeness, including a different conjugation for verbs, special verbs and pronouns, verbs indicating relative status, use of different nouns, etc., as shown above.
Japanese has a lot of pronouns for use in different occasions, and different pronouns for men and women, younger or older, etc. These pronouns are not used all the time, but often elided when the reference has been established and is obvious from context.

Japanese is a Subject-Object-Verb language as compared with English which is a Subject-Verb-Object language.
Japanese nouns do not have gender, they may not be modified by definite or indefinite articles because none exist in Japanese, and the singular and plural forms are usually the same.
All Japanese verbs, except for two irregular verbs, can be divided into two groups or conjugations which differ only in the way in which they form their stems and infinitives.

J-List side blog: Japanese language overview: Grammar overview
One feature of Japanese are grammatical "particles" which "mark" parts of a sentence as the subject or topic, the predicate, the object, and so on.
This is a good sentence because it uses all three writing systems, as Japanese in fact does all the time -- kanji (Tokyo), katakana (tower) and hiragana (the particles and the verb arimasu, "to be (in a place)").
I said earlier that Japanese is an agglutinating language, which means that a lot of information is communicated through the form of the verb.
