Japanese rock - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Japanese rock (often abbreviated J-Rock) is the Japanese form of rock music.
While psychedelic rock was known for the drug intake of its performers leaving an impact on the hazy, drugged-out music, J-Rock performers tended to be drug-free, or even adamantly against the use of drugs (for example, Kosugi Takehisa, Haino Keiji, Nanjo Asahito).
A fringe movement from the late 1980s in Japanese alternative rock took the form of noise rock, a sound popularised by bands such as Boredoms.

Japanese Rock, Chinese Mushroom, America in the Cold by Mike Rogers
China argues that Okinotorishima island, the southernmost island in the Japanese archipelago, is merely a rock, not an island, in an attempt to nullify Japan's claim of an exclusive economic zone around the small island, which is under Tokyo jurisdiction.
While Beijing acknowledges that Okinotorishima belongs to Japan, it stressed that it did not fall under the classification of an island as defined by the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea, but is instead a rock, which cannot be used to designate an exclusive economic zone, as the Japanese government has done.
The Japanese government got smart and backed off interfering, thereby allowing business and the free market to take over, and now Chinese vegetables can be bought at any supermarket in Japan and the benefactors are the Japanese consumer and the Chinese farmers.

Psychedelic rock was invented in the 1960s by American and British counterculture figures.
From the late 1980s popular rock bands such as X Japan helped define the Visual Kei aesthetic in Japanese rock and pop music.

A History of Japanese Rock Music
Japanese space-rock was born with Hadaka no Rallizes (also known as Les Rallizes Denudes), who drew inspiration from the Velvet Underground's Exploding Plastic Inevitable light and sound shows and from Blue Cheer's heavily amplified sound.
While commercial success was on the side of diligent imitations of western fads, such as Loudness and Anthem's million-seller imitations of Deep Purple and Van Halen, a new generation of avantgarde rock musician was being raised.
Japanese bands excelled at this parodistic and futuristic approach to kitsch and muzak.

Use of Rock in Japanese Gardens
Rather than being "rock gardens" in the Western sense, Japanese gardens generally use rock in subtle ways to evoke the qualities of the natural landscape.
The soil is washed away, leaving exposed rock at the edges of rivers, lakes, and oceans.
JAPANESE ROCK GARDENS Almost all Japanese gardens can be defined as "rock gardens," but one style of Japanese garden is particularly famous for its bold yet simple expression of the quality of stone.

@Zen Garden - Japanese miniatures rock gardens
Muso Soseki, a Zen priest and poet known as the father of the Zen rock garden, was born on the west coast of Japan in 1275, and died in 1351 in a temple on the outskirts of Kyoto, where he had created one of his last rock gardens.
The gardens are a means to discover the sources and strengths of our natural humanity which, according to Zen teaching, is poised, calm, sincere and capable of facing all matters in life with calmness and perfect composure.
For the Japanese it is an instrument of meditation and relaxation - in the West it is regarded as a stress reliever.

Introduction - Japanese Rock Opera Hamlet
Of course it does not necessarily mean that the Japanese think of him as wicked; rather he is a kind of symbolic figure in Japan, a permanent candidate for the throne.
By the end of this rock opera the Gravedigger is no longer the Fool but a deus ex machina dominating the stage.
Even in radical adaptations such as Bob Carlton's rock musicals, in which Ariel was a robot in a spaceship and King Duncan an Elvis look-alike star, one can still rely on the audience's knowledge of the original to use their 'favourite quotations'.

Japanese Rock Garden, or Flat sea garden
Surrounded by a flat expanse of raked sand that represents the sea, it ends with "waves", at a symbolic shoreline.
The technique of shakkei, or "borrowed scenery" is often used by incorporating a distant vista as a background of the design, thereby perceptually enlarging the size of the garden.
Sometimes a parable is told by the placement of stones in the raked area, similar to that done in the sand-and-stone garden, but whereas the sand-and-stone garden is enclosed with a wall, the Flat Sea garden takes its place within the whole of nature.

Some architects and outdoor art patrons are irate at the city's demolishing a sunken Japanese rock garden at 611 Walker to make way for a connection to the downtown pedestrian tunnel system.
As part of that effort, the city is ripping out a 1968 rock garden built in a sort of open air well beneath street level by Fred Buxton, a prominent Houston landscape artist of the 1960s.
Vargas said she recently intervened with the site contractor and has until Monday to locate heavy equipment to salvage the large, fl boulders that were the garden's centerpiece.

The volcanic rock carving was found at an archaeological site in Chino, Nagano Prefecture, where the first remains were confirmed of a settlement from the Jomon period (10000 BCE — 300 BCE).
The carved rock — 30 centimetres high, 19 centimetres wide and seven centimeters thick — was found in 1967.
At that time Hideji Harunari, a professor at the National Museum of Japanese History, said that the piece might not be as old as previously believed, because the carved lines had no trace of weathering.

 Women in Japanese Rock Music
One of the things that makes Japanese rock so exciting is the number of women involved.
Of course, there are women in Japan who have succeeded in fields largely dominated by men, but it happens substantially less frequently there than it does here in the U.S. The result is that many young women get involved with music, in either mixed bands, or all women bands.
Shonen Knife proved that being in a rock band was a career option for young women, and though they were the first Japanese women's rock band to gain a name for themselves in the West, I sincerely doubt they'll be the last.

 English in Japanese Rock Music
Songs are often titled in English, or a line or two of the refrain might be in English, simply because it's hip and gives their image a more modern sheen.
Sometimes Japanese musicians themselves prefer to write their songs in English, feeling that rock music should be sung in the language it was born into, and they believe that it sounds best in English.
Buffalo Daughter is another band that writes mainly in English; and a band called Love Psychedelico, whose singer grew up in California, rode the top of the Japanese pop charts a few years back by singing songs that mixed Japanese and English phrases together almost half and half.
