 Japanese submarine I-8 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Japanese submarine I-8 was a World War II Junsen Type J-3 Imperial Japanese Navy submarine, famous for completing a technology exchange mission to German-occupied France and back to Japan in 1943.
German news agencies announced that "now even Japanese submarines are operating in the Atlantic." Over a period of about a month, parties and visits to Paris and Berlin were organized for the crew.
Her captain who had encouraged and participated in the events, Tatsunoke Ariizumi committed suicide at the Japanese surrender, and no charges were ever brought against the remainder of the crew, few of who survived hostilities.

USS Corvina (SS-226), a Gato-class submarine, was the only ship of the United States Navy to be named for the corvina, any of various important food fishes related to the weakfish and the croaker of the Atlantic coast.
Her assignment had been a dangerous one: to patrol as closely as possible to the heavily-guarded stronghold of Truk and to intercept any Japanese sortie endangering the forthcoming American invasion of the Gilbert Islands.
Japanese records report that Japanese submarine I-176 fired three torpedoes at an enemy submarine south of Truk 16 November, claiming two hits which resulted in the explosion of the target.

A part of Rear Admiral Stump's "Taffy 2" in the Battle off Samar, Haggard and her group were surprised on the morning of 25 October by heavy units to the northward under Admiral Kurita heading toward the invasion beaches on Leyte Gulf.
As the carriers of "Taffy 3" retired at top speed and the gallant destroyers, including Hoel, Heermann, and Johnston, attacked the Japanese at close range, planes from both carrier groups attacked repeatedly and effectively in the hope of diverting the overwhelming Japanese force and allowing the American light units to escape.
Shortly before midnight she detected a surfaced submarine with radar, and after it dived attacked with depth charges.

 DD-554 Franks
In May, screening minelayers in Buka Passage, Franks and Haggard (DD-555) contacted attacked, and sank Japanese submarine I-176 on 16 May. Returning to the central Pacific the next month, Franks joined in the preinvasion bombardment of Guam from 12 July, and gave fire support to the assault troops who landed there 21 July.
After replenishing at Manus, she returned to Leyte late in November, and in December joined the fast carrier task force to cover the landings on Mindoro, and to conduct strikes in preparation for the Luzon assault of January 1945.
Still screening the fast carriers, Franks took part in strikes on the Japanese home islands on 16 and 17 February 1945 on the eve of the invasion of Iwo Jima, then sailed from Ulithi 14 March for strikes on Kyushu and the Nansei Shoto in preparation for the Okinawa operation.

She was very active in the Pacific during 1944, participating in the Marshalls, Marianas, Palaus and Leyte campaigns.
On 15 May, while operating in the Solomons Islands, Johnston assisted in sinking the Japanese submarine I-176.
Though she was lost in this action, along with most of her crew, Johnston's efforts were instrumental in saving most of the carriers and preventing the Japanese fleet from reaching the Leyte invasion area.
