Japantown first sprung up with the original influx of Japanese immigrants in the mid-1800s.
The locale suffered a further indignity during the fifties, when scores of old Victorian residences, housing hundreds of residents, were torn down to widen Geary Boulevard in the name of ill-advised "redevelopment".
Japantown is one of the city's smaller districts, so it should take no longer than two or three hours to stroll through the locale in its entirety.

Today's JapanTown was formed after the 1906 San Francisco Earthquake and fire and occupies an area of the Filmore district that is roughly within the confines of California Street to the north, O'Farrell Street to the south, Fillmore to the west and Laguna to the east.
JapanTown was also negatively impacted by redevelopment in the 1950's with the widening of Geary Boulevard and the destruction of dozens of Victorians to make room for both the boulevard and the Japan Center Mall.
The Japan Center — with its Peace Plaza and five-story Pagoda is the dominate architectural structure in JapanTown.

Seattle's Japantown grew with the immigration of Japanese laborers in the late 19th and early 20th century who sought economic opportunity in the United States at a time when the nation had recently banned Chinese immigration.
To some extant, Japantown's hardships were shared with the rest of the International District, which saw 40 of its hotels close and its population drop from 5000 to 1300 people between 1950 and 1978.
Located in the heart of Seattle's Japantown at 6th and Main, the Panama Hotel was one of a number of low-income hotels that catered to itinerant laborers, low wage workers, and new arrivals to the city.
