The Jardin des Plantes is the main botanical garden in France.
The Jardin de Plantes maintains a botanical school, which trains botanists, constructs demonstration gardens, and exchanges seeds to maintain biotic diversity.
The Comte de Buffon became the curator in 1739 and he expanded the gardens greatly, adding a maze, the Labyrinth, which remains today.

Nantes and its Jardin des Plantes, which was founded in 1791, is particularly connected with the discovery, import and introduction of the magnolia to Europe.
Plants arriving at Nantes were gathered at the Physic Garden, grown on and sent to the King's Garden in Paris.
The Jardin des Plantes no longer has the space for the new varieties of magnolia and the almost complete collection is now to be found at the Parc de la Beaujoire, on the northern edge of the city.

The origins of le Jardin des Plantes lie in a rarely evoked fact that its founder, king Louis XIII, had a personal doctor from Montpellier, Jean Héroard, whose loyal services had also been used by Charles IX, Henri III and Henri IV.
He expanded the jardin du roi under his supervision all the way to the banks of the Seine, and new buildings were added, including a 600 seat amphitheatre.
The difference of being a gardener in the jardin des plantes from working for the city or a bourgeois employer is that they decide what kind of plants to grow.

In 1577 the apothecary Nicolas Houel founded the Maison de la Charité Chrétienne (House of Christian Charity) with a "garden of simple plants", the first botanical gardens in Paris.
In 1626 Louis XIII, at the instigation of his physician Héroard and his apothecary Guy de la Brosse, founded the "jardin de plantes médicinales" (Medicinal Plant Garden) which then became the "jardin du Roi" (the King's Garden).
On the right there is Guy de la Brosse's maze, the tomb of Daubenton and a cedar tree from the Lebanon planted in 1734.

Jardin des Plantes is a small, lovely garden, though it is not at all in the category of other huge, well-maintained gardens in Europe.
And the Serres de Auteuil (sp?) is a botanical extravaganza par excellent - serres mean hothouses - on edge of central Paris and highly acclaimed.
I have some pics at Webshots and 4 of them are from Jardin des Plantes this past October.
