Topic: Jared Whitaker

In the News (Thu 16 Feb 12)

The Popkorn Junkie :: Panic Room
Jared Leto stars as Junior, the thief who orchestrated the entire burglary, but the one who also seems the most useless in the trio.
Forest Whitaker is creepy, yet thoughtful as the sinister crook, and Dwight Yoakam plays one hell of a convincing bad guy.
Jared Leto is over-the-top, but amusing and provides comic relief.

Flipside Movie Emporium: Panic Room Movie Review
Meanwhile, Jodie Foster is acutely watchable whether she's making a slow-motion dash to the safety of the panic room with the bad guys on her tail, or struggling to keep her daughter calm as her blood sugar level plummets.
The rest of the cast -- with the possible exception of Jared Leto, who should be put on a leash -- is stellar as well, particularly Forest Whitaker as the most decent among the thieves.
Whitaker, a big teddy bear with a melancholy gleam in his eyes, gives his character a much deeper life than he probably had on the printed page.

The Panic Room - a Movie Review of The Phantom Tollbooth
Whitaker plays a man who installs these rooms and has a head for inventive ideas, while Dwight Yoakam is the menacing heavy.
Jared Leto is barely recognizable and is the one who masterminds the robbery, but isn't at all sure of himself.
Foster and Whitaker both give their usual strong performances, and newcomer Stewart is surprisingly effective (surprising because it's a demanding role, and she pulls it off).

As it was, the bad guys were not unique in any way, other than Dwight Yoakam's terrifying-looking face, the husband was a complete throw away and I found myself wondering why he was even introduced, and I kind of felt like the actors were playing themselves in general.
Jared Leto's whole Requiem For A Dream repeat loser druggy performance was at moments nauseating.
Ironically, Forest Whitaker is the heart and soul of this film.

Jodie Foster, Forest Whitaker, Jared Leto, Dwight Yoakam, Kristen Stewart, Patrick Bauchau
The burglars are composed of Burnham (Forest Whitaker), Junior (Jared Leto) and Raoul (Dwight Yoakum).
Burham works for the security company that installed the panic room and Junior was a male nursing companion to the old man, whose confidence he finally gained and who eventually related to him the story of a secret safe in the room that holds a treasure.

 Review - Panic Room ***1/4 - CTF
To his credit the character is probably supposed to be portrayed as a selfish brat that has no idea what he gets himself into, but Jared Leto seems to overact this part a little too much.
Warranting acclaim for his role as Burnham, Forest Whitaker does a good job as a guy trying to do essentially what Jodie Foster's character is trying to do, help his family.
Whitaker plays the role perfectly, effectively conveying the emotional strain on his character, whose needs and desires are at war with his conscience.

 Panic Room London Movie Review
Neither Whitaker nor Leto are really evil - they weren't expecting to find anyone in the house and they both have their reasons for being there - so there's a lot of tension as to how far they'll go to get what they want.
Apparently she was pregnant for the latter stages of the film (which was shot chronologically for obvious house-destroying reasons), though luckily Fincher never has to resort to hiding her behind tabletops and the like.
Of the rest of the cast, Whitaker is the standout and succeeds in making his character believably sympathetic.

Dan Heller's Movie Review of "Panic Room"
Sure enough, on the first night, Meg and her diabetic daughter Sarah (Kristen Stewart) find themselves holed up inside, while three villains (one of whom is Forest Whitaker) break in the house to steal a stash of loot left behind by the recently deceased previous owner.
Forest Whitaker's motivations for robbing the house are implied strongly in the beginning, but the "need" is never followed through to allow us to feel justification for his taking such risks.
And finally, while Whitaker's character has a "change of heart" to do something "good", the film doesn't follow through with any sort of acknowledgement by Meg to bring closure to their unfortunate and tragic encounter.

At times he is quite obviously showing off--like with the sliding camera movements (partly computer-generated) through the house, tracking Whitaker's attempts to enter via the front door, the back door, the windows, and finally the skylight, seemingly in a single take.

Are they two separate lines conjoined for the trailer's sake, or are they meant to portray the two characters' differing perspectives on their situation.
Leto last worked with Fincher in "Fight Club," and last year shattered his teen dreamboat image in Darren Aronofsky's "Requiem for a Dream." It appears from his amount of screen time in the trailer, that Leto is indeed the primary adversary for Foster and Stewart.
However, Forrest Whitaker appears to also have a prominent role as an outsider of the room.

Whitaker does an excellent job inspiring sympathy for his character while keeping him flawed and realistic.
On the opposing side is Raoul (a nearly unrecognizable Dwight Yoakam), a detestable man whose macho attitude may jeopardize the entire operation.
The jittery, fairly unintelligent Junior (Jared Leto) stands between the two forces but lacks the fortitude to solve any problems.

Post-separation, she and her daughter, Sarah (Kristen Stewart), move into a massive brownstone on Manhattan's Upper West Side which features an interesting architectural anomaly — an ultra-secure secret chamber called a panic room, built for sequestering away one's riches or hiding from unwanted visitors.
Newcomer Stewart does a bang-up job as Sarah, and '80s art-house vixen Ann Magnuson is a hoot in her cameo as a real estate agent.
Of the villains, Whitaker and Yoakam are solid, but Leto's character quirks become wearisome by the end of the picture.

 Panic Room - Movie Review
The special thing about the house, apart from being creepy with a capital C and inexplicably bathed in a constant green light, is that it has a panic room - an impenetrable closet-space in which to hide from any passing baddies.
Crouched inside the super-expensive panic room facility, Meg and Sarah must be left wondering why the previous owner didn't put some of that investment into making the house a little less easy to break into in the first place.
Foster's her usual reliable self and Whitaker does a decent enough job as the "nice" one among the villains - although he can't be all that nice, bearing in mind that he's just broken into someone else's house.

 KINNOPIO - Panic Room
Even the best in Hollywood can't get it right all the time, but it speaks to the success of David Fincher's career that he can have an off day and still be very good.
In a lot of ways, Panic Room is similar to 1994's The River Wild, a suspense thriller in which Meryl Streep played a whitewater rafter who is forced at gunpoint to take two robbers through dangerous rapids as part of their getaway.
Although calling it "white-knuckle" may be something of an overstatement, the story will often have the viewer gripping the armrests of his or her seat with something more than normal pressure.

His camera prowls up stairs, glides through walls, and, in one amazing computer-assisted tracking shot, follows the villains from inside the building as they inspect the exterior for weak points.
Foster - who took over the role after Nicole Kidman pulled out, despite being four months pregnant - is endlessly resourceful as the imprisoned heroine, while Forest Whitaker is convincingly conflicted as the most sympathetic of the bad guys.
Only the film's eagerness to cut to the chase - there's little time to get to know the characters before they are plunged into peril - mars an otherwise hugely accomplished slice of Hitchcockian suspense.

Next to the Lord of the Rings Extended Editions (both Fellowship and Towers), this 3-Disc Panic Room Special Edition was fantastic and very in-depth with how Fincher accomplished some of his ground-breaking shots- one of them dubbed "The Big Shot".
On the first disc you get three commentary tracks including one from writer David Koepp and special guest William Goldman, another from cast members Jodie Foster, Dwight Yoakam and Forest Whitaker and then one from director David Fincher himself.
What I liked about each of these tracks was that they rarely crossed over each other- meaning they never really repeat information thereby making each track interesting to listen to.
