The Norwegian Jarmann M1884 was among the first bolt action repeating rifles to be adopted in the Western world.
The Jarmann M1884 fired a 10.15 mm flpowder cartridge in an 8-round tubular magazine in which the rounds were lined up in a tube below the barrel.
The sights on the Jarmann M1884 as first issued were graduated to a distace of 2400 m, and the original issue ammunition had a muzzle velocity of about 485 m/s to 500 m/s.

In Norway, it was fitted with a cruciform bayonet for the army and a knife bayonet for the navy.
The Jarmann was Noray’s second most produced rifle until the Krag Jørgensen and the Norwegian version is virtually impossible to get hold of.

The Jarmann was is turning bolt action rifle outwardly similar to the Italian M1870 Vetterli, the German M1871 Mauser and French M1874 Gras.
The Jarmann sight, in addition to its 1,500 meter graduation, (later modifications extending the standard range to 1,600 meters) is fitted with an auxiliary "volley" sight on the left side of the fore end for ranges out to 2,600 meters.
The Jarmann receiver is unique and unmistakable in having a split bridge with the bridge being divided into two sections (forward and back) and the bolt handle base locking the bolt by closing between the two sections.

The Jarmann M1884 fired a 10.15 mm fl powder cartridge in an 8-round, tubular magazine in which the rounds were lined up in a tube below the barrel.
It has a non-rotating bolt (the part of the action that seals the rear end of the barrel) locked by a rotating bolt handle, and reputedly a smooth action.
The M1884 with this final form of sight was also equipped with a sidemounted volley sight, intended for indirect volley fire over long distances.

It is clear from the list that the Jarmann M1884 was significantly better than the other rifles tested, allthought in part this must be due to the higher muzzle velocity of the Jarmann.
As part of the rebuild, the magasine was removed, the handguard and barrel shortened and the repeating mechanism removed.

As a curiosity, it may be mentioned that Jarmann M1884 owned a Krag-Petersson with the serial number 168
By comparing it to the Remington M1867, which was the standard issue rifle in the Norwegian Army, as well as against the standard service rifles of Germany, France and the United Kingdom at the time, it is quite clear that the Krag-Petersson suffered from having been designed for an outdated cartridge.

Another distinguishing feature was that the Jarmann M1884 rising from the magazine was not seated automatically, but had to be pushed into the breech of the rifle.
It is also known that 18 August and Krag-Jørgensen tested the Krag-Petersson, without adopting it, and that Krag travelled Europe extensively to market the Krag-Petersson.
The Krag-Petersson remained in use in the Royal Norwegian Navy for almost 25 years, alongside the Jarmann, and, from 1896, the Norwegian rifles.
