Jaroslaw Iwaszkiewicz Biography | Dictionary of Literary Biography
The voluminous work of Jaroslaw Iwaszkiewicz should unequivocally be recognized as important, both within its native Polish tradition and within an international context.
A canonic figure of twentieth-century Polish literature, Iwaszkiewicz was a versatile and polyvalent writer who expressed his artistic ability in various genres and forms.
Born on 20 February 1894 in Kalnik near Kiev, Jaroslaw Iwaszkiewicz stemmed from a family of Polish gentry and intelligentsia and grew up in the cultural climate of three national traditions--Polish, Russian, and Ukrainian.

Born into the Polish minority living in Ukraine, Iwaszkiewicz studied law and music in Kiev from 1912, settling in Warsaw in 1918, where he belonged to Skamander, a group of lyrical poets which included other homosexuals, such as Jan Lechon and Stanislaw Balinsky.
In 1922 Iwaszkiewicz married Anna Lilpop, the daughter of a rich Warsaw industrialist, a marriage which resulted in two daughters.
Iwaszkiewicz's life recalls the rich intellectual basis of Polish gay culture in the inter-war period as well as its continued existence in post-war Poland.

Lynx is an adaptation of a short story ("The Church at Skaryszew") by Polish writer Jaroslaw Iwaszkiewicz, originally about the 1863 uprising in the Ukraine against the Russians, but changed in this film to the time of the German Occupation.
The "lynx" of the title is Satan himself, incarnate as an assassin out to eliminate a collaborator - and his counterpoint in the priest in the village church who first encounters the "lynx" in the confessional.
From that point on, the priest's own mettle is sorely put to the test - and the adversary is not one to back down easily.

Iwaszkiewicz kept the manuscript, but it was destroyed in a fire in Warsaw in 1939.

In his stories from the 1930s, "Zygfryd" and "The Teacher" (Nauczyciel), sexual tensions clash with social repression to culminate in a tragic end.
In the later work "The Fourth Symphony" (Czwarta symfonia), Iwaszkiewicz inserts homosexual motifs as part of the main theme, the relationship between art and life.
