Jason King (television) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Jason King was a TV series which had 26 episodes broadcast in the UK in 1971 and 1972.
Jason King was created by Dennis Spooner and like its predecessor was made by Lew Grade 's ITC Entertainment production company (which had become successful with such series as The Saint and Danger Man), for ATV - Grade's broadcasting subsidiary of ITC.
Many episodes would play on the fact that King, when not fighting bad guys and seducing continental beauties, was the author of a type of fiction that might be adapted for an adventure TV series.

 MTV.com - Movies - Peter Wyngarde
Lightning finally struck for Wyngarde in 1969 when he was cast in the ITC television series Department S, (produced by Monty Berman) in the role of Jason King, a well-spoken, sardonic, randy mystery author who works for a top-secret Interpol investigative unit.
Jason King lasted a single season, but it became something of a pop-culture phenomenon and also an albatross around Wyngarde 's neck.
He was too closely identified with the role of Jason King; even in the mid-'70s, years after the show aired, his name turned up as part of a gag in a Monty Python sketch, in which lunch with Peter Wyngarde is part of a prize in a contest aimed at housewives.

King was best taken in small doses which worked in "Department S" as he did not have to carry the plot.
King also suffered from not having strong regular characters the equal of Sullivan and Hurst to bring him down to earth when necessary and balance his excesses.
Having said all that, "Jason King" remains a far more interesting, entertaining and original series than most and Peter Wyngarde (view "Night of the Eagle" to see him at his very best) one of the more complex and electric performers let loose in the lead of a major TV series.

'T' Is For Themes - The Composers
This took place in a time when television companies were prepared to include in their budgets money to pay for an orchestra (complimented by a large rhythm section in the case of the shows mentioned), so composers had at their disposal a wide and varied musical palate to unleash their ideas on.
Being common as it was for television scores to incorporate a large orchestra or group, before the advent of MIDI sequencing, digital synthesizers and samplers, this has led inevitably to the trend of one person or only a few people required to create music.
King used this to launch his new career as a composer for film and television.

In "King of Texas," Patrick Stewart, with both his beard and hair long and white, brings a sense of noble, arrogant futility to the role of John Lear, an 1840s Texas land baron who decides to divide his estate among his three daughters according to how enthusiastically they declare their love for him.
Oddly, though, one of Shakespeare's particularly gruesome key scenes, which the king of all playwrights portrayed head-on, is played off-camera; apparently director Uli Edel was too squeamish to handle the whole truth.
The setting of "King Lear" has been changed, along with a few names and plot details, but Shakespeare's story and his message remain as eternal, and as durable, as Texas itself.

Whilst the cases which made up the bulk of the show's episodes were often fun, ingenious riffs on the standard spy/caper craze of that particular decade, where the series really scored was in the interplay between the three central characters involved.

Although crime-writer-turned-detective Jason King, as played by the deep-voiced Peter Wyngarde, was the star supporting character of the 1969-70 series Department S, he seemed rather diminished when given a show of his own, thus robbing him of the straight characters necessary to show off his flamboyance.
Jason King also ditched the impossible mysteries of the parent series in favour of more ordinary puzzles that the Saint or any other two-fisted hero could have solved without having to spend so much on fabulous fashion gear.
That said, Wyngarde is well-matched by his foils, the value-for-money hams Dennis Price and Ronald Lacey, as the government agents who forced Jason to catch villains for them by threatening to turn him in for failing to pay his back taxes on the earnings of his bestsellers.
