Jason Rohrer - a 26-year-old programmer - thinks he has the key for making file-sharing a popular activity once more.
While studying in California, Rohrer was inspired by a colony of ants that insisted on invading his indoor Ficus tree.
Rohrer took it a step further and learned that ants use pheromones or chemical scents to communicate in the colony and create the trails.

Covering tracks: New privacy hope for P2P | Tech News on ZDNet   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-13)
Jason Rohrer was battling an insect invasion last year when he hit on an idea that he hoped would help file swappers hide from the copyright police.
Rohrer's Mute is a more extreme version of this proxy idea, in which every computer on the file-swapping network becomes a middleman, passing on search queries and actual files that are on their way elsewhere in the network.
Rohrer says this is the natural trade-off between speed and perfect anonymity.

ONLamp.com: Anonymous, Open Source P2P with MUTE
Jason Rohrer has devised what could be the next technological headache for organizations like the RIAA: a P2P system that can mask the identity (or, at least, the IP address) of each user connected to it.
Rohrer, a 26-year-old programmer from Potsdam, New York, found inspiration in the way ants stream toward a food source.
From observing the creatures' behavior, he mapped out a networking method that functions similarly — essentially, a shared file is the food source, and clients on the network are the ants seeking the food.

"Konspire2b was started a year ago as a research project," Rohrer - a PhD student at the University of California, Santa Cruz - told us.
Rohrer continued that a few years ago, he worked on a Java-based p2p project called 'konspire' which saw several releases but ultimately never took off.
Several other developers have started working on pieces of the k2b project, says Jason, adding, "For example, Shayne White is improving the Cocoa kastLauncher App for Mac OS X."

boycott-riaa.com - Article: Untraceable File Sharing Inspired by Ants   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-13)
Now Jason Rohrer, a 26-year-old programmer in Potsdam, N.Y., thinks he has a way to really boost file-sharing back into popularity.
When Rohrer was living in Santa Cruz, Calif., and studying for a master's degree in computer science, he noticed a trail of ants had invaded his indoor Ficus tree from the front door.
Rohrer says he initially didn't design MUTE as a blatant challenge to the RIAA and its efforts to stop piracy.

 Kast
With the arrival of Kast, described by its creator, Jason Rohrer, as the first konspire2b-based app, "powerful organizations lost the advantage that they had been holding onto for hundreds of years" and for the first time, people can distribute, "high-quality content to a massive audience without expending large amounts of time, money, or other resources".
By reversing the existing p2p model, we came up with k2b: instead of sending requests into the network in search of a file, the sender pushes announcements into the network in search of potential receivers.
Jason continued that a few years ago, he worked on a Java-based p2p project called 'konspire' which saw several releases but ultimately never took off.

 [Cc-uk] Copyright-Free Derivation Through Software
But when you distribute the Mono file when everybody knows that you’re supposed to use Rohrer’s “file A” as the other file in order to get the MP3 back out, you’re just distributing the MP3 in a different encoding, like distributing it in some encrypted form, or in a ZIP file.
Rohrer recognizes that MP3s are copies of sound recordings because “an algorithm exists that can convert an MP3 file into sound mechanistically without any additional information”.
Since everybody knows that you just XOR the mono file with Rohrer’s freely-distributed “file A” to get the MP3, there’s a well-known algorithm that can turn the Mono file into sound.

A long while back (at least it seems like a long while back) I was snooping around on the web, killing time, etc. and I found a project called iTunes Music Store 4 All at Downhill Battle.
As you can see, if you visit that page, they have a list of ideas for what could be done with the script initially created by Jason Rohrer, including converting the markup to XHTML and templating it (making it pretty) with CSS.
I think the script is a good starting point for something that I’d like to do when I have some time to spare (read: never): Some kind of music search engine that searches all available online-music stores to show which ones have the track you’re searching.

Monolith can also reconstruct an Element file from a Basis file and a Mono file.

Boing Boing: Monolith and digital copyright
BoingBoing reader Jason Rohrer created an app called Monolith, which "munges" together two arbitrarily-selected binary files (called a Basis file and an Element file) to produce a Mono binary file (with a.mono extension).
Jason says the resulting Mono file will not be statistically related to either file, hence becoming an interesting tool for exploring the boundaries of digital copyright (what is the copyright status of the resulting.mono file?)
Things get interesting when you apply Monolith to copyrighted files.
