And maybe the fact that they first tried to foist their twisted (but oh so delightful) mix of country, rock, rockabilly and general madness on the public during our buddy Ronald's morning in America might have something to do with it.
From all-out rockabilly like "Self-Sabotage" to high lonesome wails like "Everything Has a Cost" (with Emmylou Harris on backing vocals), Jason and the Scorchers can be seen as progenitors for everyone from Wilco to Tarnation.

TrouserPress.com :: Jason and the Nashville Scorchers
Hillbilly cats with a serious punk streak, Jason and the Scorchers were — in their early days — about as un-Nashville as a Nashville-based band could be.
In 1981, as the legend goes, Jason Ringenberg left his daddy's Illinois hog farm for the bright lights of Nashville and promptly stumbled upon guitarist Warner Hodges and bassist Jeff Johnson in a gutter.
By the time the Scorchers delivered their long-come (and long-gone: they broke up soon afterwards) third album, the group was sporting a second guitarist and a new bassist.

Country Standard Time: Jason and the Scorchers in concert
Booed in honky-tonks for being too punk and abused in punk clubs for being too hillbilly, they created their own roost and proceeded to rule it like the hick visionaries they were, while influencing a whole host of youngsters who loved the twang and the loud-fast rules as much as they did.
And though neither record industry nor most record-buyers gave a damn, the Scorchers never walked away from the intensity of their belief in the holy spirit that the best rock and roll is consumed by.
So when in the midst of between-song patter, Jason Ringenberg called his band "seasoned veterans," he certainly didn't intend to suggest that their time may have passed - he was just stating a fact.

Rockzilla.net Jason & The Scorchers "Wildfires & Misfires" by William Michael Smith
It's been quite a year for the release of reissues and rarities, but few measure up to the supercharged sonic nuggets from the vaults of one of the hardest working bands of the 1980's, Jason and the Scorchers.
Recorded for the Scorcher's Thunder and Fire album in 1988, the song was eventually left off the album because "unfortunately during that time a truckload of angel type songs came out so we decided not to use it." The track contains some of the slickest, most sophisticated backing harmonies ever recorded by the band.
And to those who don't know the Scorchers but who happen to somehow end up with their ears in front of copy of Wildfires and Misfires, well, those folks are either in for an epiphany or a shock to their musical system.
