In Dec. 1856, the subject of this sketch came to this county and engaged in the mercantile business, which business he continued in until 1874, when he disposed of it and engaged in banking which business he has continued in since.
Iowa City was then the terminus of the railroad, and pork, grain, implements, and all kinds of produce had to be hauled in wagons to different towns in the surrounding country.
At the end of that time he came to Newton, this county, where he was associated with the First National Bank until 1875, which year he moved to this city.
