Jasper County was established as a governmental entity January 29, 1841, with the split log house of George Hornback at the pioneer village of Jasper on a bluff above Spring River designated the first, temporary courthouse/county seat.
The government was, organized February 25, 1841, at the Hornback house with the first meetings of the Jasper County Court and the Circuit Court for Jasper County.
It was in 1894-95, that the present Jasper County courthouse was constructed in the center of the Carthage square.

On Dec. 10, 1810, a legislative act renamed the county because of Randolph's opposition to the War of 1812 (though eventually he was forgiven and in 1828 would be recognized by having another new Georgia county named in his honor).
On this day, the county became Jasper County in honor of Revolutionary War hero Sgt. William Jasper, who during the siege of Savannah was mortally wounded while retrieving his regiment's flag from the British.

 Seven Islands Trail
As The History of Jasper County reports, the Seven Islands area on the Ocmulgee is probably one of the oldest North American areas known to white man. As early as the 1670's, Carolina fur traders mention the Seven Islands of the Ocmulgee as a trading spot with the Indians.
Since Jasper County was a frontier county, Seven Islands was considered the last stop before entering Indian Territory, and, therefore, became an important stop for settlers.
The History of Jasper County also emphasizes the role of all modes of transportation, not just the Seven Island Stage Coach Road, as key to understanding the growth and development of Jasper County.

Jasper County's first courthouse, a one-story building on the north side of the square in Carthage, was built by Levi H. Jenkins for $398.50.
