The early Pandyan dynasty of the Sangam literature went into obscurity during the invation of the Kalabhras.
The Pandyan Kingdom finally became extinct after the establishment of the Madurai Sultanate in the 16th century.
After being overshadowed by the Pallavas and Cholas for centuries, Pandyan glory was briefly revived by the much celebrated Jatavarman Sundara Pandyan in 1251 and the Pandya power extended from the Telugu countries on banks of the Godavari river to the northern half of Sri Lanka.

On a study of the inscriptions at the Vedanarayana temple at Mannarkoil village, it is established that the temple was built during the time of this Viceroy.
The temple had 10 epigraphs, all belonging to the period of Pandyan second Empire from 1216 to 1310 A.D. The epigraphs had fortunately been copied by the Archeological department in 1907.
One of the inscriptions is by Jatavarman Vira Pandyan, who describes himself as the conqueror of Elam, Kongu, Chola and Chera territories.

After some time, crowning Lord Muruga, their son, who was named Ugra Pandya, Sundara Pandya and Thadathagai went into the temple and assumed divine forms as Lord Somasundara and Goddess Meenakshi respectively.

Koneri Rayan literally means King Koneri and was the title used by Kolottunga III, Sundara Pandyan and by those of later Pandyas.

The earliest inscription in the Meenakshi temple complex belongs to Kulasekhara Pandya (1190 - 1216 A.D.) Scholars believe that the sanctum of the Sundareswara temple, called Indra Vimana, was built by him.
It is probable that Kulasekhera constructed this sanctum in stone removing an earlier temple of brick and mortar built around 8th - 9th centuries A.D. Following Kulasekhara, many Pandyan Kings like Maravarman Sundara Pandya (1216 - 35) Jatavarman Kulasekhara (1237 - 1239), Vikrama Pandya (1253 - 74).
Virapandya (1296 - 1342) etc. contributed much to the development of this temple.
