If you were a member of the press and a pre-registered attendee to JavaOne, you would have, in the weeks preceding the annual Java lovefest, had the dubious honor of a flood of e-mails from the public relations folks who represent the many members of the Java ecosystem.
So, when at JavaOne this year, Sun announced that it would be open sourcing a reference implementation of the enterprise version of Java, you can imagine how this could easily be viewed as Sun finally granting those who've been pressuring the company their long term wish.
Although it's hard to say which of the JavaOne announcements is the most signficant one, the fact that Oracle is now giving away JDeveloper for free is both noteworthy and a sign of the times.

Well, JavaOne certainly doesn't disappoint in that area : 20,000 attendees and steadily growing ever since the first year (only 6,000 then).
The fact remains that all the announcements made that morning (and the next days) are a big deal for Sun and their partners, and the message is loud and clear.
Once you have your Pilot, all you need to do is go to one of the numerous "sync stations" and update your Pilot with all the latest information : more classes, missing pieces of software and updated information about the conference (rumors, schedules, locations, maps, etc...).

JavaOne is the Java equivalent to Microsoft's PDC or TechEd.
But where with those conferences, you see bloggers proudly declare that "they'll be there", with special icons and even special blog-sites, there seems to be very little of that going on in the Java camp.
Because apart from the learning experience and the free t-shirts, I'd also like to meet other Java bloggers (and possibly the occasional Microsoft one, which should be easy enough to spot ;-) while I'm there.

In the first general session, we were told it's the biggest JavaOne conference to date and I can certainly believe that looking at the lines to the sessions and crowds everywhere.
I woud have chosen the hideous orange color precisely so that you could spot the geeks.

 JavaOne Unveils Good Developments
As this week's tenth annual JavaOne conference kicks off in San Francisco, my schedule has never been so densely packed with show-floor appointments to be briefed on an impressive variety of technologies.
Everything from Nokia's mobile and handheld devices to GigaSpaces Technologies' enterprise-scale virtual server infrastructures is going to be represented in my conversations there, and much of what I see will be discussed in an eWEEK Developer Solutions special report on July 25.
The JavaOne conference, year after year, seems dominated by what I can only call delight: a shared sense that this is the right technology, doing the right things in the right way, and creating so many opportunities that I can barely fit a representative sample of interviews into my tightly packed calendar this week.

Although Java, with its formalized programming approach, faces challenges from the free-form philosophy behind open-source programming, the number of Java programmers increased from 3 million last year to 4.2 million this year, Sun said.
In addition, attendance at the four-day, programmer-heavy JavaOne show is likely to be up on last year's total of 15,000, Sun said.
