Topic: Jawbreaker (band)

In the News (Mon 4 Jun 12)

Jawbreaker (band) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Jawbreaker's lyrics, largely scribed by Schwarzenbach, were imbued with a literary drunk's melancholy along the lines of early Charles Bukowski and late Anne Sexton and fused personal longing and love-sickness with an animistic fetishization of objects both public (boats and boxcars) and private (books and bottles).
The band's cult status as the definitive nineties post-"emo" band has grown since its breakup, and songs such as "Kiss the Bottle" and "Jet Black" are referenced as influences by bands such as Sparta.
Jawbreaker will long be remembered as one of the most influential bands of the nineties: incorporating indie ethic, literary sensibilities, and maturity with the hardcore punk sound of Dischord Records and SST Records.

i don't think of myself as an 'artist'; i consider myself to be in a band, but we have a serious side which is reflected in the lyrics, and i don't see it in a lot of the hip, punker bands today.
it's a real shame when bands that you have known for years and thought were your friends turn out to be nothing but a bunch of music industry back stabbers.

Jawbreaker was contacted by Shredder, and the band contributed the song to a 7" vinyl compilation on the label entitled The World's in Shreds Vol.
In August, the band returned to Anderson again to record a song for a compilation of Mission District bands; musically, the song "Kiss the Bottle" was simpler and poppier than the brooding songs of Bivouac, although no less gut-wrenching in the lyrical department.
In late October, Jawbreaker made the controversial decision to play a few dates in the midwest with the popular rock group Nirvana; they were subsequently reviled by fans who despised what they perceived as the band's flirtations with corporate America, especially in light of Schwarzenbach's long-standing and outspoken opposition to major labels.

Jawbreaker has managed to stick out amongst the mid-nineties pop-punk bands, despite their sell out move and the passage of time.
Dear You represents a drastic sonic change for the band, with a much thicker, smoother sound and softer vocals that are sung rather than shouted—it is as though the band found a variety of new tools with their massive budget and didn’t know when to stop polishing their rough core.
Jawbreaker is no longer quite the righteous martyr of a band screwed by the major label, because they have won.

As much as a tribute album to Jawbreaker is an understandable reaction to a band of this magnitude, some things are sacred and should be left to stand on their own.
Although Jawbreaker is in fact a band responsible for bringing a unique sound and dynamic to a genre of music that is often marred by its simplicity and its musicians amorphous creativity, they are not impervious to being bastardized by the people who care about them the most; their peers.
Most of the bands on this album take everything that was unique and dynamic about Jawbreaker's music, beat it with a mincing mallet, chew it up, spit it out, crap on it, brown and serve.

LEFT OFF THE DIAL - Album Reviews - Jawbreaker Tribute: Bad Scene, Everyone's Fault
One important fact about Jawbreaker is that they were the last band to sign to a major label in the pop-punk mania of the mid-1990's.
Bands like the Ataris and Blink 182 don't really mind that they're essentially copies of copies of copies, etc. They'll accept their awards and politely thank their mindless 13- year-old fans for having mommy/daddy/Aunt Joyce pick their album up for them.
One of their favorite bands undoubtedly is The Reunion Show, and one listen to this band's cover of "Unlisted Track" on this Tribute proves how easy it is for bands to sound exactly like Jawbreaker and get away with it.

While some argue that this release showed a band that was dull and had lost its edge, I’ll argue that it shows the maturation of Schwarzenbach and company.
Jawbreaker might have been better off taking cues from bands like Screeching Weasel and never going to a major label, but they chose to take the other path.

Jawbreaker had as much impact in the underground music scene as Nirvana did on the mainstream (the two even toured together).
The song merrily attacks its mohawk mafia critics on "Indictment," where Schwarzenbach proclaims "It won't bother me, what the thoughtless are thinking." Oddly enough, the newer wave of pop-punk acts that failed to retain their underground credibility often cover "Boxcar," which unintentionally insults the music and its songwriter.
But Jawbreaker's strength was always in their confessional love songs.

Regarding my naivety with bands, no dice there either, because yes, it is true that some groups have one person that writes all the songs, but it takes the talent and songwriting of all the members to make a song happen.

You can hate a band, but whether they are overrated or not is based on the quality of songs for their genre, their ability to transcend said genre, and the influence they have had.
For their genre, Jawbreaker wrote some of the best songs ever, they broke most, if not all, of the boundaries in that genre with Dear You, if not with their songwriting beforehand, and their influence, whether direct or indirect, on the modern punk scene is incalculable.

In the band’s eight years of existence, they managed to build up a strong fanbase, record over five albums worth or material, alienate some of their diehard fans and, in the end, even alienate their record label.
Still, the legend of Jawbreaker lived on, and fans eventually clamored to get their hands on “Dear You,” which was out of print within a few years and severely hard to track down.
The melancholic lyrics are delivered with more emotion than any band today claiming to be “emo.” From beginning to end, the band seems tighter than you ever thought they could be: Schwarzenbach’s lullaby-like guitar parts throughout the verses and Bauermeister’s intentional and heavy bass lines combine with Pfaler’s understated drumming and gentle cymbal work.
