"Jaws 2" instituted the now common practice of sequels as a film franchise.

Jaws 2 is distinctly more disturbing in places, but equally, Williams fashion some new and hugely memorable out to sea adventure music.
I was tempted to say that Jaws 2 doesn't have the same number of stand out cues as the original, but it would be a disservice to the score as there are plenty of memorable moments and a couple of great new themes in amongst the sometimes dissonant action cues.
Jaws 2 is perhaps unfairly overshadowed by its Oscar winning predecessor despite being a terrific follow up and another Williams gem.

While critics have dismissed "Jaws 2" in the past, the film definitely deserves a second-look and the new DVD from Universal Home Video is the perfect forum for that re-visiting to occur.
There are definitely some disturbing scenes in "Jaws 2", both in terms of the shark attacks, but also the aftermath of these attacks.
Something that "Jaws 2" does share with "Jaws" is that it’s a film which takes advantage of the widescreen frame and the framing on this transfer appears to be perfect.

While Jaws 2 is no Jaws, it is certainly leagues away from the ludicrous Jaws 3 and the embarrassing Jaws: The Revenge.
For someone who has always thought Jaws 2 a bit underrated, I found the extras to be heavenly, but even for a casual fan they are fun and informative.
The 'Making of Jaws 2' featurette runs about 45 minutes and really gives a thorough and entertaining lowdown on the film, with lots of fun anecdotes and behind-the-scenes footage and interviews.

What's more important about Jaws 2 is that even set apart from its infinitely superior predecessor, viewed as a stand-alone film, it's still not that great of a film.
Jaws worked because the audience gave a flying flip about what happened to the characters; in Jaws 2, spotting potential victims can become a drinking game if the mood is right.
At best, Jaws 2 is an okay thriller that, despite passing as mediocre entertainment, does have some very nice views of the ocean -- whenever blood isn't being spilled in it.

from UK Jaws, the original film, was a frightening and well crafted film that had an impact on generations of film goers.
Its a shame then that Jaws II and all the films that followed it are so bad.

Jaws 2 has us going for popcorn, safe in the knowledge that if we miss seeing it, it’ll be back onscreen in another five minutes or so.
I’d like to think the makers of Jaws 2 were giving it back by featuring a killer whale that’s been eaten by their shark, but I doubt it.
His example was Jaws, and how it basically followed the mold of playwright Heinrik Isben’s Enemy of the People, with Brody taking over the protagonist’s role of a man attempting to force the town elders to confront a situation that could cause them financial harm.

Fittingly, Universal's Jaws 2 disc is not on a par with their DVD release of Jaws, but it still satisfies more than it perhaps ought to.
Sadly, Scheider is AWOL from another Jaws doc, though Szwarc reveals that it took awhile for the star to recapture his inner Brody.

Jaws was the biggest blockbuster of all time.
Jaws 2 tells the continuing story of Chief of Police Brody and the town of Amity Island, as it is terrorized by another killer shark.
At the eighteen minute mark, I wrote down "So far, this is just as good as Jaws." That didn't last, but I was constantly surprised by how good it all was, in spite of the big shoes it had to fill.

The transfer of the video on Jaws 2 is better than average, but looses points for being oversaturated in the reds.
Further, the majority of the film appears to have been transferred directly from the unsqueezed 35mm anamorphic print, resulting in images which are too thin and tall.
Jaws 2 appeared in the original MCA DiscoVision catalog in 1978, and lasted until the October 1980 edition.

The image often had a very nice sense of depth helped a great deal by the clean and sharply defined colours, with no chroma noise to be seen.
He talks about his memories of Jaws, Jaws 2 and the scoring process in general, and also mentions Star Wars.

With the original Jaws being touted as a masterful film, the makers of Jaws 2 must have been rather intimated this time going in, but at the end of the day Jaws 2 is a very faithful and very decent followup to what did become a declining film series.
Jaws 2 certainly offers far more extras than expected.
All in all, Jaws 2 is very nicely presented on DVD, and is certainly the best of the "sequels" and makes a nice companion piece to the Original.

JAWS under the firm hand of director Stephen Spielberg and the appealing tri-parte buddy acting of Roy Scheider, Robert Shaw, and Richard Dreyfuss, combined to produce a monster film that was so good that the presence of the monster was almost a secondary afterthought.
Perhaps if new director Jeannot Scwarc had tried to do more than just reshoot a plot that resonated in the original but fizzled in the sequel, then JAWS 2 might have had more going for it than watching an aquatic version of a teen slasher flick.
The only way JAWS 2 might have been significantly different would have involved more human interest and less focus on shark canines.

Scheider is back in his role of Brody, but the kids are a bit older and have retained their love of messing about in boats.....
Jaws II has some great scenes, and while the story might not be quite as strong as the original, it certainly should not be lumped together with b-movies like Pirrana (shame on you, Amazon!).
If after watching Jaws you are longing for more then this film does satisfy that appetite because it does have all the tentions and emotions of the first film.

The original LP and 1992 CD feature about half an hour of music that Williams rearranged and re-recorded for the sole purposes of the album, and this was for a long time the only available music from the picture.
Before that could be released, however, Universal decided to hasten a project of releasing the entire original 51 minutes of Jaws music --not the re-recordings done in 1975-- on an album to coincide with the much hyped collector's DVD release (25th anniversary) of the film.
Overall, outside of two or three cues, Jaws is not something you can sit and listen to for any great length of time.

In probably a first where a DVD has enough extras to be called a Special Edition and isn't, as opposed to some that are called Special Editions and aren't, Jaws 2 is packed with a good collection of titbits for those that enjoyed the sequel.
Opening up the collection is a Making Of feature focusing on the troubles that the production had with the original director bowing out due to the overwhelming nature of the movie and the expectation upon it.
Rounding out the visual extras are trailers for Jaws 2, 3, and the Revenge, whilst Production photographs and storyboards complete a good collection of extras.

Naturally, the town fathers don't want to confront reality and choose to proceed with a lucrative sailing regatta, resulting in a grisly loss of life.
Besides the fact that director Jeannot Szwarc takes an impersonal, workaday approach to the film, Jaws 2 manages to be both stylistically flat and openly cynical about its commercial intentions.

It even has some passably scary moments (Brody discovering a charred body in the waves; the swimming boy racing the shark back to his dinghy).
Roy Scheider comes off best, reprising his role as Chief Brody, while Lorraine Gary's role as his wife is expanded (she must be a glutton for punishment: she also starred in Jaws 4: The Revenge).
Taken as a sequel Jaws 2 is inferior in every way; taken as an unassuming TV movie it's a respectable, workmanlike effort; but looking forward at what was to follow, it begins to look like a minor masterpiece.

To bad they made Jaw's 2, 3,4 and whatever else.

A sequel was inevitable for the enormously successful Jaws (1975), and this sequel will be enjoyed by anyone who liked the first film.
The plot is basically very similar to the original- there are more shark attacks on Amity island, and Martin Brody (Roy Scheider) is unable to convince the mayor to close the beach.
Definitely not a classic, but still a very enjoyable film which is not worth missing.
