Jay County is bounded on the north by Adams and Wells Counties, on east by Mercer and Darke Counties, Ohio, and on the south by Randolph County and on the west by Delaware and Blackford Counties.
Jay County was created by an act of the Indiana General Assembly of February 7, 1835 and organized by a law of January 30, of the following year, effective March 1st.
On December 5, 1835, it was ordered by the Board of Commissioners “that the County Seat of Jay County be designated and known by the name of Portland,” –; by an act of the Indiana Legislature of January 25, 1843, Portland was incorporated as a town.

It was named for John Jay, co-author of the Federalist Papers, Secretary of Foreign Affairs under the Articles of Confederation, and first Chief Justice of the United States Supreme Court.
In the county the population was spread out with 27.00% under the age of 18, 7.70% from 18 to 24, 27.30% from 25 to 44, 23.30% from 45 to 64, and 14.70% who were 65 years of age or older.
The reference is to the unincorporated town of Fiat near the intersection of Indiana State Routes 1 and 18 in Jay County.

In 1834, the families in the southern part of the county began to think their settlements important enough to be under restraint of law and began to organize townships.
Jay County enjoyed considerable growth during the gas boom, which began in 1886 with the discovery of what was thought to be an unlimited supply of natural gas.

 Aaron Dillie of Jay County, Indiana
Jay Andrews has an Aaron Dilley born in VA who moved to Morgan Co., OH about 1812 where two probable brothers John and Moses also lived.
Jay Andrews speculates that Aaron who is in the Allen Co. 1850 census is a Virginia Dilley with a link to the Cumberland area.
This year (1834) is known among the settlers then living in the county as the 'hard years' and the 'squirrrel year.' It was a time of great hardships, caused by the coming of squirrels in vast numbers, who destroyed the crops.

SPAHR was born in Madison township, this county, December 1, 1860, and is a daughter of David T. and Jane (PRATT) MILLER, the latter of whom was born in Greene county, Ohio.
David T. MILLER was born in Kosciusko county, Indiana, and early became a resident of Jay county, where he spent the remainder of his life engaged in farming.
WALTER was born on a farm in Hancock county, Ohio, August 29, 1853, and is a son of Frederick and Melvina (DEAL) WALTER, the latter of whom was born in Fairfield county, that same state.

Plenna T. Bickel (1838-1927) recorded in his diary the dates of death of those that died in the Jay County, Indiana area between 1881 and 1923, with the addition of a few of his relatives with earlier deaths.
Although, Jay County, Indiana has been shown as the location of this report it may not have been the actual place of death for some individuals.
Some of the deaths may have occurred in the surrounding Indiana counties of Adams,Wells, Blackford and Randolph, and the Ohio counties of Mercer and Darke.

Even the Wright Brothers (Orville and Wilbur) had a connection to the new churchs, as their father was Bishop Milton Wright of the United Brethren in Christ Church which was established in Jay County.
The Paxsons, some having married out of faith and others still very much Quaker came to Jay County en masse from many of the other Quaker Communities in the eastern states.
Joseph Jefferson Paxson, the mailman between Huntingdon County Indiana and Ohio brought many of his 18 children to Jay County, which is why you will still see many Paxson names in the local phone book.
