"Jay" as in JayRoach, director of the Austin Powers movies and the recent Robert DeNiro-Ben Stiller hit, Meet the Parents, which, if Hollywood gave comedies their due at Oscar time, might be up for best-picture consideration.
Jay was present at the creation and tossed an idea or two of his own into the mix.
Jay proved to the studio guys' satisfaction that he knew what he was doing, and they stopped looking over his shoulder, Matt says.

Roach credits the authors of HITCHHIKER'S, and AUSTIN POWERS for inspiring him: "When you're around people with minds like Mike Myers and Douglas Adams, you do start to believe there is an elite class of brain that not all of us get.
Roach says he was a fan of the James Bond films, and grew up with them, but also appreciated other films "that didn't take themselves quite so seriously, but were certainly inspired by Bond: OUR MAN FLYNT, the Matt Helm movies, and a few European versions of the spy genre.
Roach agrees with a report that Myers is also a fan -- even an "addict" -- of The History Channel: "Yes, in fact that's something he and I had in common when we first met.
Roach later moved to television, where he co-produced and was a second unit director on the television movie Lifepod (1993), a sci-fi adaptation of Alfred Hitchcock's Lifeboat.
Working under a tight budget of only 17 million, Roach and Myers were stunned by the popularity of the film, and followed it up with a sequel two years later.
Roach presently lives in Los Angeles with his wife Susanna Hoffs, who is an actress and the ex-lead singer of the 80's band The Bangles, and their two children.
Roach marked his directorial debut with the 1997 box office hit Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery, starring Mike Myers, following that with the blockbuster sequels Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me and Austin Powers in Goldmember, with Myers twice reprising his role as the titular swinging spy.
Roach is President of Everyman Pictures, which is currently in post-production on the big screen adaptation of Douglas Adams' popular The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, with Roach serving as producer.
Roach also served as associate producer and wrote the story for the action-thriller Blown Away, starring Jeff Bridges and Tommy Lee Jones.

With only four films to his credit, director JayRoach is already a Hollywood heavyweight.
Roach continued his winning ways this past fall with Meet the Parents.
JayRoach: I wish had a crystal ball to look at and say, "This is going to be a huge hit, because I would have probably I don't know; I don't know if I would have gone at it differently, but I definitely did not know it was going to be a huge hit.
Director Roach (he directed all three "Austin Powers" movies) is a native of New Mexico, and everyone from his folks to the Governer are pretty excited about the project.
Roach joined Gov. Bill Richardson at a news conference in the Capitol on Monday to announce the Twentieth Century Fox film project, which has a $75 million budget.
JayRoach is best known for directing all three "Austin Powers" movies, as well as "Mystery, Alaska," "Meet the Parents," and "Meet the Fockers."
JayRoach told Variety his decision to join Fox had something to do with the fact that he lives a short bike-ride away from the company's Hollywood headquarters.
In fact, the first project Roach is developing for Fox is based on his neighborhood.
The untitled film, which Roach is writing with "Saturday Night Live" writer Adam McKay, will pit the neighborhood's "most relentless socializer" against a privacy-loving new resident, Variety said.
Born in 1957 in Albuquerque, New Mexico, Roach attended the prestigious School of Cinema-Television at the University of Southern California, earning a master's degree in film production in 1986.
During his university years, Roach was nominated for a student Acade.....

JayRoach made his feature directorial debut with the "Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery" (1997), which united the suave glamour of a James Bond film with the sharp silliness of a Peter Sellers vehicle.
Roach employed much of the jumpy stylistic editing so popular in 60s cinema and also used appropriately garish Technicolor hues in scenery and costumes.
Roach proved faithful to his franchises, returning for a third go-round with Mike Myers with the sequel "Austin Powers in Goldmember" (2002), which remained pleasingly fresh with the addition of Powers' father Nigel (Michael Caine), '70s superspy Foxy Cleopatra (Beyonce Knowles) and a further exploration of the Dr. Evil-Mini-Me dynamic.
An ironic confession, to be sure, considering that Roach has helmed each installment of the hit Austin Powers series starring Mike Myers, including the newest and third one.
Roach goes on to explain his rationale, saying that he always asks himself: "Is there enough there to really justify it?" The answer to that question, not surprisingly, came directly from the main creative force behind the whole Austin Powers series, co-writer/star Myers.
For Roach and Myers, one of the ingredients to making the father conceit work was finding the right actor to play Sir Nigel Powers, the legendary figure in whose shadow Austin must live.
Both of the regular folk are decent, sensitive people, but believe they pale in comparison to their "better" halves and consequently feel like insignificant others in their marriages
No word on casting yet but the movie wil tell the tale of two regular people who are both married to saint-like do-gooders.

Four of the six principals in the Meet the Fockers cast have among themselves five Academy Awards and an additional ten nominations for acting, one Tony win and six additional nominations, and numerous other acting awards and nominations from around the world.
Two disparate families, the hippie-ish Fockers (Dustin Hoffman, Barbra Streisand) and the conservative Byrneses (Robert DeNiro, Blythe Danner) meet before the wedding of their children, Greg Focker (Ben Stiller) and Pam Byrnes (Teri Polo).
JayRoach ("Austin Powers", "Meet the Parents") is attached to direct and Peter Landesman ("Who Killed Daniel Pearl?") has been set to write an untitled film about W. Mark Felt for Universal Pictures and Playtone reports Variety.
The career FBI man revealed himself last year to be 'Deep Throat', the secret source who helped Washington Post reporters Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein crack the Watergate cover-up conspiracy.
JayRoach had been a cinematographer and editor for a decade, toiling in television (Lifepod, Space Rangers) and forgettable films (Blown Away, The Empty Mirror) before being hired to direct his first film, the Mike Myers spy spoof Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery.
It made a respectable $53 million, but its sequels, also directed by Roach, have dwarfed that take.
Roach'sMeet the Parents and Meet the Fockers with Ben Stiller and Robert De Niro have also been hugely popular Hollywood moneymakers.
